An excellent opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, organised and efficient Matron for Safe Staffing. This is a visible role providing day to day leadership for maintaining safe staffing across the Trust.

As the Matron for Safe Staffing, you will bring your nursing expertise to support the clinical divisions to maximise the provision of nursing staff to clinical areas of the Trust, particularly to the inpatient wards.


The post holder in conjunction with Associate Chief Nursing will lead on nurse workforce utilisation and safe staffing across the organisation.

You will support the provision of sustainable staffing which is safe, effective and affordable.


To provide professional leadership and management for the development, implementation and monitoring of acuity and other national safe staffing strategies for Nursing.


The post holder is responsible and accountable for the overall clinical and operational day-to-day delivery of safe nurse staffing, utilising the Trust's acuity tool, in accordance with set objectives, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints to ensure the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service that meets patient need.


  • Operational responsibility to ensure safe nurse staffing levels, including leading daily operational staffing meetings, documenting actions and completion of a daily nurse staffing plan.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing use of the Trust's acuity tool, monitoring and analysing daily acuity and dependency staffing data to support staff staffing decisions.
  • Develop processes in partnership with Chief Nurse, Associate Chief Nurse, Matrons and Ward Leaders to improve roster efficiency and support in reducing the dependency on temporary staff.
  • Support with Workforce data reporting in relation to Safe Staffing as per national guidance and requirements, the development of the Care Hours Per Patient Day (CHPPD) metric and the use of workforce related data to support strategic and operational decision making.
  • With the support of the Associate Chief Nurse, take responsibility for the leadership and coordination of twice yearly nursing skill mix reviews using multiple methodologies to ensure a triangulated approach.
  • Synthesise and analyse skill mix review and workforce information to inform local workforce planning priorities and the local delivery plan.
