Salary:
£22,815 pro rata


Background. The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum is a small military museum which tells the story of the Regiment from its founding in 1702 to its amalgamation in 1992 into The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment - partly based in Hampshire. In addition to onsite visitors, the museum receives regular family history enquiries and reaches audiences all over the world through its digital engagement.


We wish to appoint a part-time Museum Assistant to provide a friendly welcome to museum visitors, while providing support to the Curator with online enquiries and digital engagement during quieter times.


The job will be based in Serle's House in Winchester, which was built in 1730 and is Grade II listed.

The museum itself offers level access but there are some narrow passageways and steps in the back offices.

This role offers an ideal entry into museum work for someone who enjoys research and customer-facing roles.


Front of House/Visitor Engagement Duties.

  • Key-Holder open and close the museum, ensuring the safety of visitors and the security of the collections and building.
  • Be the first point of contact for visitors and assist them where necessary.
  • Carry out Visitor Exit surveys.
  • Assist with group visits to the museum, including assisting with the museum's educational programme, and in delivering introductory talks.
  • Museum shop sales including cash & card payments, maintaining sales records and packaging online sales for posting.
  • Designing seasonal activities and family trails, and distributing as required
  • Occasional assistance at external open days and events

Research Duties

  • Research Family History enquiries and compile reports using the archive and open source materials.
  • Creation of short posts on collections items or regimental history for social media and digital engagement.

Other Duties.

  • Attend training courses or seminars as necessary.
  • Work with volunteers and placement students as directed.
  • Ensure familiarity with the Museum's fire regulations and emergency procedures and adhere to all Health and Safety policies.
  • Any additional tasks as required by the Curator to assist with the museum's operations.

The Applicant - Skills/qualifications, experience and qualities
The successful applicant will demonstrate the following essential and desirable requirements:


Essential:


  • 5 x GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English grade 4/C and above.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (in English)
  • Ability to engage with a wide range of people, no matter their background
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail when writing
  • Willingness to learn regimental history and ability to engage with visitors seeking information.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and on individual projects.
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desirable:


  • Interest in military and/or local history.
  • Knowledge of social media, apps and WordPress.
  • Heritage sector experience
  • Retail or customer service experience, including cash handling

Terms and Conditions
You will be employed by The Royal Hampshire Regiment Trust, initially on a 6-month probationary period. You must have the legal right to work in the UK.
