  • This position is fixed term for 3 years.


We are looking for a highly motivated team member to take a lead role in project management for preparation of the Walsall Local Plan which seeks to deliver growth and regeneration in Walsall through delivery of new housing, employment and infrastructure.

The position is a fixed term vacancy for 3 years on a 0.6FTE basis as part of the planning policy team within the Planning & Building Control Service area.


Walsall is a regional town with a rich history and a bright future with potential to deliver significant development and investment projects and is working in collaboration with the West Midlands Combined Authority and other public partners to deliver regeneration projects.

Walsall Council has been awarded £11.4m from central government for the Future High Street Fund Programme to help deliver a Connected Gateway project to enable the delivery of two of the Town Centre Masterplan interventions; Transforming the Rail Station and Connected Hubs and Walsall and Bloxwich town areas stand to benefit from £21.3m each of Town Deal funding through the governments Towns Fund programme to deliver urban regeneration, green transport and economic growth outcomes.

Walsall has also secured £20m of Levelling Up Fund Round 2 (LUF2) for Willenhall.

The development of Willenhall Garden City in Walsall will be accelerated by this grant, which will play a key role in unlocking a £210 million regeneration plan, enabling the delivery of new homes, parks, and a railway station.

You must be able to demonstrate relevant experience in planning policy and have excellent communication and customer service skills.

The role is to take the lead in the overall project management of the Walsall Local Plan preparation of detailed work plans necessary associated with the preparation of the plan, including management of a defined project portfolio with full operational responsibility and accountability.

The role will include managing resources and projects to help deliver the plan, reporting on progress of projects, maintaining an overview of project risks to ensure these are proactively managed and resolved as necessary and to work collaboratively with stake holders, and relevant external partners, to assist in the delivery of the programme.


The post holder will be expected to develop working partnerships both within and outside the Council with key stakeholders and also engage effectively with senior Local Authority colleagues and elected members locally, sub-regionally and regionally and provide advice in respect of planning policy and guidance to customers and stakeholders and to follow statutory procedures and local practice to achieve corporate objectives.


Negotiation and organisational skills are key to this role and you will also need to demonstrate excellent IT skills especially the use of MS Office.


You will need to be a qualified Town Planner and have a full driving license and access to a vehicle for carrying out site visits.

You will be also be expected to meet the Government's Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty. The post is politically restricted.
