Description

Following the retirement of the current postholder, NHS Ayrshire & Arran is looking to recruit a Head of Service/Professional Lead for Psychological Services who can continue to lead and develop services within a supportive, collaborative and cohesive culture.

This is an exciting opportunity to build on the progress made in expanding the psychology workforce, developing new services, and implementing an efficient, effective, and coordinated leadership structure.

The Head of Psychological Services is supported by three Heads of Psychological Specialties and Consultant Psychology Leads from an expanding range of nearly twenty Psychological Specialties.


We are looking for a proven leader who has significant and demonstrable leadership and management experience at a senior level within a Psychology service.

You must have delivered safe and effective clinical care working within the context of a senior leadership team.

Experience in clinical and professional governance, strategic planning, service commissioning, budgetary management, and quality improvement are essential for this role.

You should also have a proven track record of contributing to the profession at the highest levels.


You must be trained to Doctoral level in Psychology, and be currently registered with the HCPC as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist.


NHS Ayrshire & Arran Psychological Services comprises over 100 staff including Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists in CBT, Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology, Counsellors, Graduate Assistant Psychologists and Masters and Doctoral Psychology Trainees.

Services are delivered to the population directly through specialist therapeutic intervention with patients with complex difficulties.

Psychological Services provides expert advice, consultancy, training and supervision in order to develop the psychological skills of other health and non-health professionals.

It also aims to enhance the delivery of psychological care across the whole healthcare system through formal contribution at strategic and planning levels.


The service places a strong emphasis on governance and provides excellent opportunities for CPD to support high-quality service delivery to patients and career development for our staff.

The service has close links with the University of Glasgow, Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Programme and both the Adult and Child Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology Programmes at Dundee, Stirling and Edinburgh Universities.

This post is permanent and is offered full-time. Variation in these contractual hours may also be considered.
