The
Head of Public Affairs and External Relations plays a crucial role on the leadership team for the policy, research and advocacy department.

This person has the important job of shaping the organisations approach to influencing and advocacy across important policy areas.

The role involves creating and executing public affairs strategies in both the UK Government and Devolved nations, which involves engaging with government and parliament and keeping tabs on political stakeholders.


About you

Key responsibilities
The holder of this role will be responsible for leading a variety of key responsibilities:

  • Lead the team in creating and executing advocacy and public affairs strategies
  • Build relationships with political and policy influencers through effective stakeholder engagement strategies
  • Work closely with different departments for seamless government engagement
  • Stay ahead of the game by gaining insights that inform influencing and engagement strategies
  • Maintain strong external relationships to enhance the organisation's reputation and ability to influence
  • Be an active participant in the leadership team and offer support to the director
  • Stay on top of budget and team performance, and share important political insights with senior leadership
  • Lead by example with behaviours such as authenticity, empowering others, adaptability, and being dynamic, inclusive, compassionate, and courageous

To be successful in this position you should have the following:

  • Substantial experience in public affairs work or in a similar role in a consultancy or voluntary sector organisation
  • Proven success in influencing public policy/practice
  • Ability to design and deliver an effective influencing events activity and events programme
  • Strong strategic and tactical political advice skills for senior leadership
  • Line management and team leadership experience
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and manage demanding deadlines
  • Diplomatic and professional approach to relationship management with elected presentative and organisations
