Locum Band 6 Dysphagia Speech & Language Therapist - Surrey

We have a fantastic opportunity for a locum Speech Therapist to join a leading teaching hospital, based in Central London.

Working independently in a clinical role as a key member of the Speech and Language Therapy team in a developing specialist role, to deliver evidence-based clinical services.

Placement educator for Speech and Language Therapy students.


Job Description**- Work for the most part autonomously, with a specialist, often complex caseload, to assess, diagnose, develop and implement programmes of care.

  • Assess, differentially diagnoses, formulate treatment plans (in collaboration with patients and carers), write assessment reports, identify and choose appropriate therapeutic or clinical management techniques from a range of options, provide appropriate therapeutic intervention and evaluate treatment outcomes.
  • Be accountable for own professional actions and recognise own professional boundaries, seeking advice as appropriate
  • Develop specialist evidence based treatment programmes for self and others (e.g. students) which may involve using specific therapy software.
  • Liaise with a wide range of professional colleagues and other agencies to ensure comprehensive management of the patient. This includes attending regular handover meetings and case conferences.
  • Carefully plan for patient discharge, ensuring appropriate onward referral and liaison as required.
  • Adapt practice to meet individual patient circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences as well as the barriers of communication disability.
  • Work closely with patients and their carers in goal setting and decision making around the management of the patient.
  • Demonstrate negotiation and influencing skills, both with colleagues and other professionals as well as patient and carers e.g. motivating patients to engage with the therapeutic process.
  • Use empathy, tact, sensitivity and discretion when communicating life changing events e.g. poor prognosis for return of speech/language/swallow function.
  • Act as an advocate for patients who have difficulty communicating.
  • Demonstrate excellent presentation skills to promote multidisciplinary and interagency liaison and collaborative practice to broad range of audiences.
  • Develop advanced sensory skills e.g. those used for listening to speech disorders and for phonetic transcription.
  • Attend and contribute to departmental meetings.
  • Refer on for specialist assessment e.g. for Assistive and Augmentative communication. Liaise with specialist centres to provide continuity of care and help source funding for equipment.
  • Responsible for the safe use of departmental equipment by patients e.g. iPad/laryngoscope.
  • Take part in a rostered programme of work that includes bank holidays/weekend working after meeting the appropriate competencies.
  • Actively work towards extending own clinical competencies in a specialist field e.g videofluroscopy/tracheostomy/voice clinic/paediatric feeding/cleft lip and palate.
  • Contribute to interagency/multidisciplinary team building and policy development.

Position Requirements

  • HCPC Registered
  • 3 month (minimum) locum assignment to start as soon as possible
  • Full time hours (Monday
  • Friday)
  • Minimum of two years postgraduate experience
  • Previous clinical experience performing a similar role within Adult Dysphagia
