Head of Infrastructure Design - Permanent - Mobile Telecoms - Berkshire


Exciting opportunity for someone with a strong background in Construction Engineering (civil/rail/nuclear/defence/utilities),who has expertise in design principles, to take ownership in a high profile role with leading telecoms infrastructure organisation.


The Role:


The infrastructure directorate is accountable for the design, deployment and in life management of site infrastructure to meet safety, service and deployment requirements and enable EE/BT and Three to deliver their best customer experiences at the lowest cost.


The purpose of this role is to lead and proactively manage all aspects of site infrastructure design on behalf of the Infrastructure Director.

To ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory standards and achieve agreed business outcomes and performance targets set by EE/BT and Three and the risk appetite set by the MBNL Board (including safety, risk, service, quality and cost).


What you can expect to be doing:

  • Accountable for the leadership and proactive management of all aspects of site infrastructure design on behalf of the Infrastructure Director.

    To ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory standards and achieve agreed business outcomes and performance targets set by EE/BT and Three and the risk appetite set by the MBNL Board (including safety, risk, service, quality and cost).

  • Accountable for acting as the Design Authority for site infrastructure to meet safety, service and deployment requirements and proactively support the in life management of site infrastructure (including inspection and maintenance requirements) throughout all stages of the end to end life cycle (including design, planning, deployment, operation, in life management and decommissioning) including all related forums, communications and governance control points.
  • Accountable for establishing, embedding, owning and the continuous improvement of the component and solution designs (including architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical and ICNIRP), standards, methodologies, processes, systems, controls, capabilities and relationships required to enable the design of site infrastructure to be undertaken by Principal Designers and Principal Contractors.
  • Accountable for establishing, embedding, owning and the continuous improvement the standards, methodologies, processes, systems, controls, capabilities and relationships required to enable the integration (including system introduction and new product introduction) and deployment of active infrastructure to be undertaken by Principal Designers and Principal Contractors.
  • Accountable for working in concert with the leadership teams in the supplier ecosystem, EE/BT, Three and MBNL to create a high performing, service based organisation and maximise the value MBNL creates for its Shareholders. To deputise for the Infrastructure Director when required to ensure the successful running of the directorate.
  • Accountable, in conjunction with the MBNL Health and Safety team, for implementing Health & Safety and Quality Management best practice. To ensure Health & Safety and Quality are integral to site infrastructure design, and proactively managed throughout, all stages of the end to end lifecycle.
  • Accountable for the proactive management of all site infrastructure design related risks, issues and interdependencies. Undertaking direct intervention to identify root cause issues, instigate corrective actions and recovery plans to ensure compliance with MBNL standards, policies and achieve agreed business outcomes and performance targets.
  • Accountable for working in concert with MBNL, EE/BT and Three teams to develop and maintain a deep understanding of their service requirements, clearly communicate the requirements and obligations placed on them as customers of site infrastructure and hold them to account for meeting them. Translating and communicating to the MBNL teams in a way that is meaningful and relevant.

What we are looking for:


  • Expert knowledge of the design principles, standards, methodologies, processes, controls and capabilities required to act as the Design Authority for infrastructure with a communications or physical infrastructure industry.
  • Significant experience civil, structural or electromechanical engineering.
  • Experience of establishing, developing and leading an infrastructure design team or function to achieve agreed business outcomes, performance targets and industry benchmarks.
  • Significant experience of managing, motivating, monitoring and improving performance of contractors and suppliers.
  • Experience of building deep, effective relationships and an understanding of organisational politics. An ability to use these to socialise and influence stakeholders.
  • Strong experience of working with, briefing and influencing senior members of leadership teams.
