We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government.

We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.

We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.

About the role

The Local Government Association (LGA) are looking for an individual to provide high-level support to the Chair, supporting good cross-party decision making and enabling him to carry out his role effectively with members and externally.

About you

In this role, you will act as a vital link between the Chair and various stakeholders, ensuring the smooth progression of the Chair's priorities both internally and externally.

You will have the chance to work closely with colleagues across the LGA, providing strategic advice and timely briefings, thereby contributing to the organisation's positive reputation and impact.

  • Providing the Chair with welltimed and concise briefings, drawing from insights from LGA officers in the fastpaced political environment
  • Building relationships with Group Leaders and Heads of Group Offices, understanding their priorities to keep the Chair fully informed
  • Building relationships with ministerial offices, advisers in Westminster and Whitehall and with advisers to Council leaders and other sector groups
  • Represent the views of the Chair and other key LGA figures when required.

Experience Required:

  • Excellent written and oral skills, with the ability to accurately summarise and convey complex information
  • Track record of building relationships and working with political and policy advisers in central and local government
  • Knowledge of the workings of local and central government
  • Demonstrable political sensitivity, with the ability to exercise discretion, judgement and confidentiality when dealing with politicians and officers at every level, and to demonstrate political neutrality at all times
  • Good account management with the ability to deal with members, other clients and colleagues with courtesy, tact, and sensitivity.

The job will involve attending some meetings and other events outside normal office hours and outside London to accompany the Chair on visits and at external meetings.
