An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint dynamic and confident Senior Nurse to join the general surgical department, Whiston Hospital.


Reporting to the Matron, the post holder will be expected in conjunction with the lead Emergency Surgeon to ensure the pathway for the non-elective surgical emergency patient is evident based, streamlined, patient focused and widely disseminated and embedded.

This will ensure safe systems and processes from the point of admission to the Emergency Department or direct access via GP into SAU triage.

The post holder will lead on same day emergency care for the surgical patient.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for the post.


In conjunction with the lead upper GI surgeon and substantive ENP, the post holder will also co-ordinate the emergency 'Hot Gall Bladder' service.

According to NICE, RCS, NCEPOD guidance.

This will involve leading the day surgery programme for this group of patients ensuring that the pathway for daycase surgery is embedded, sustained and audited.


Successful applicants will need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic, have experience in general surgical nursing and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

We require an individual who is forward thinking, well organized with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change.

You will need current acute surgical experience at Band 5 level or above and have a proven track record of effective communication, leadership and clinical expertise.

The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

KEY DUTIES
Practice within the N.M.C Code of Professional Conduct
To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, acting as a liaison between General Surgical Consultants, GP Triage Staff, Theatre, Ward Staff / ED / Therapy services and social care to coordinate the NEL pathway


SURGICAL AMBULATORY CARE
Agree condition specific pathways for ambulatory care eg appendicitis, diverticulitis, cholecystitis
Disseminate across the department / ED
Patient information leaflet on what to expect
Audit
Database
Monitor and audit pilot for patients being 'pulled' from ED ready to present


EMERGENCY TAKE
In collaboration with lead emergency surgeon, put together the emergency surgical pathways / proforma for inpatient / ambulatory care patients

To ensure that all patients admitted with a surgical emergency requiring theatre intervention are fully prepared for surgery and receive treatment that is evidence based and in line with national guidance.

To provide high quality nursing care and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the specialist and complex care needs of surgical emergency patients

To monitor all patients awaiting emergency theatre, ensuring that effective patient management plans are in place and carried out in a timely manner.

To work in collaboration with general surgical medical and nursing staff to co-ordinate the surgical trauma pathway to theatre and identify and meet the needs of all surgical trauma patients
To attend daily surgical hand over meetings and post take ward rounds (as required) involving the surgical on-call / SAU consultants and the team to provide 'real time' feedback on progress against each inpatient awaiting emergency theatre
To monitor and advise on the care of all patients with surgical emergency, ensuring appropriate treatment and nursing care is provided from 'decision to admit', by regularly monitoring treatment plans a
