We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Marine Monitoring Officer 1 to lead on marine monitoring projects throughout the South coast of England, ranging from the Solent to Kent.

You will be responsible for planning, capturing, processing, and reporting on a wide variety of marine programmes and projects.

  • You will carry out fieldwork on a variety of different Coastal Survey Vessels. You will also carry out occasional RIB work. This role will include some weekend and extended periods away from your base. In the office you will manage projects and help drive forward improvements in the team.
  • You will already have experience in delivering boat based marine survey work, and preferably experience on leading teams during boatbased survey work.
  • You will ideally be based at from one of our offices in Chichester, Romsey or Exeter.
  • The successful applicant for the role will be required to pass the legal requirement for a ML5 or ENG1 medical prior to commencing employment.
  • The role also requires travelling between locations and as a result the post requires a full UK driving license.
The team

  • The Monitoring Survey
  • Estuarine and Coastal team is responsible for the delivery of the Environment Agency's marine monitoring programme. This includes water and ecological monitoring undertaken nationally throughout England and for National Resources Wales as part of an ongoing partnership. It delivers a vital service that underpins much of our marine statutory responsibilities relating to water quality. We also deliver a wide range of marine monitoring projects for internal and DEFRA customers.
Experience/skills requiredYou will be qualified to at least degree standard (or have equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline and possess proven ability and/or knowledge of:

  • Coastal and estuarine scientific work
  • Water Quality and Oceanographic instrumentation
  • Operational working practices


Other key requirements for this job include excellent communication skills, programme and project management experience, the ability to be effective under pressure and the enthusiasm to motivate other members of the team.
