Permanent full-time 37.5hrs

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Graduate Orthotist to join our large clinical team based in Oxford.

Due to recent staff changes we can offer this position to a graduate looking to start their career in a highly supportive environment.


The Orthotic service within Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, provides the opportunity to work in specialist practice within the areas of foot and ankle, paediatrics, spinal, neuro-rehabilitation and gait analysis.

We would like the successful applicant to be an integral part of our team and to bring new and varied skills to the service.


As a graduate you will have the ability to learn from experienced Orthotists, advance your technical skills in our purpose-built workshop, while treating a varied caseload of patients.

Progression to Band 6 can be offered as you develop your skills.


The Orthotic service is innovative in adopting new technology and uses CAD/CAM systems for Functional Foot Orthosis and custom TLSO's daily, while also retaining the traditional hand skills of cast rectification and orthosis manufacture onsite.

All applicants should be able to demonstrate an excellent portfolio of professional developing skills.

All Applicants must be HCPC registered and preferably a member of BAPO

To deliver Orthotic clinical services to patients within professional guidelines that ensures clinical effectiveness for optimal care pathways.


Responsible for the delivery of Orthotic Clinical care to a broad patient caseload including patient assessment and advice, devising treatment plans to facilitate patient goals and monitoring outcomes as required.

Responsible for the safe provision of Orthotic equipment and specification of bespoke devices including materials, design and componentry. Ensure all risks are minimised and documented appropriately.


Responsible for ensuring prescription decisions are made within best clinical judgements in a cost effective manner to provide a high quality and best value Orthotic clinical care.


Responsible for accurate recording of clinical findings and maintaining records in a confidential and sensitive manner in line with HCPC standards, professional standards, healthcare regulations and Trust Policy.


The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

To manage own clinical caseload within planned clinical sessions

To attend clinics as required or delegated by senior colleagues.


To design and specify appropriate orthoses and arrange for the manufacture or purchasing by providing clear accurate instructions to the workshop or to external suppliers.

Responsible for considering relevant risk assessments or safety guidance in consultations or when designing or providing orthoses.


To be responsible for reporting any untoward incidents or near misses using relevant reporting systems such as Trust Datix, MHRA or other required reporting systems.


Where appropriate to liaise with technical staff over own clinical caseload manufacturing or technical issues ensuring responsibilities are completed within lead times.

Responsible for referral and liaison other disciplines to provide optimum patient care. Recognising where alternative interventions may be appropriate.


To communicate effectively with patients, carers and families, GPs, Consultants and AHP's with regard to clinical care both in direct contact and through clinical letters and reports within a duty of care.

To maintain a current knowledge of relevant clinical pathologies to be able to devise the most appropriate prescriptions.

Responsible for keeping up to date with relevant clinical research, best practice and professional guidelines.

Responsible for own Continued Professional Development and providing feedback to colleagues through reflective practice, clinical meetings, supervision and mentorship.

To participate under the preceptorship programme to meet the Knowledge & Skills Framework outline.


Where appropriate to liaise with technical staff over own clinical caseload manufacturing or technical issues ensuring responsibilities are completed within lead times.
