Description

The Integrated Governance department are looking for a compassionate and motivated colleague to join the Patient Safety Team as the Family Liaison Officer (FLO).


The post holder will act as the main point of contact for patients and families who are involved in serious incidents and those that lead to an inquest.

They will take a lead on Duty of Candor compliance, ensuring that all relevant individuals are kept informed throughout the investigation progress.


The individual should have a professional approach with the ability to communicate with professionals at all levels across the organisation.

They must have excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a busy complex workload.


The post holder will work closely with the Patient Safety Team to identify patients and named next of kin who require the support of the Family Liaison Officer and establish a clear route of communication for each individualised case.


  • To establish communications with all affected patients, families and named next of kin individuals and guide and support them through the investigation process
  • To assist in providing clear and accurate information about the Trust's investigation processes
  • To create a professional relationship of trust and honesty
  • To listen and manage queries in a proactive manner
- if it is felt that family need further professional support the FLO will provide signposting to other qualified services where necessary

  • To support the family or nominated next of kin with the receipt and interpretation of the final investigation report, sign posting questions back to the original investigating officer or service manager as appropriate
  • Facilitate and support meetings undertaken with families and clinicians, ensuring robust records are kept and stored/shared as applicable within GDPR standards
  • Become an internal expert on undertaking difficult conversations professionally, transparently and sensitively
