About the role:

The postholder will be part of the Support Team of the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) based at its Headquarters in Space Park Leicester, part of the University of Leicester.

A NERC research centre, the NCEO provides a national long-term strategic capability in Earth Observation, namely the science of studying the Earth using satellites in space.

NCEO has an annual income in excess of £10 million per year supporting a complement of research and professional staff based at NCEO partners in a number of UK universities and research laboratories.

Its activities are currently expanding with major new projects including space missions to study the Earth, a UK climate information service, a data hub for satellite data and verification of UK progress towards net-zero.

NERC is the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), part of United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) which is the premier funder for UK research and innovation.


The Finance and Contracts Officer is responsible for the day-to-day financial implementation of NCEO's budgets which consist of baseline income from NERC, core funding of major projects and a range of grants from a number of funding bodies.

The postholder will ensure claims to NERC and other funders for income; issue budgets to NCEO partners; manage expenditure statements, invoices and procurements; support directors with costings for major project proposals; provide financial summaries for the NCEO Director and managers; and assist the centre manager in populating financial reports for the governance and financial assurance activities of the NCEO Management Board and NERC.

The Officer will also assist in the formulation, review and processing of contracts.


The post holder will work closely with the NCEO Centre Manager and the NCEO Director, colleagues at the University in the Research and Enterprise Divisions, finance and contract colleagues across the suite of NCEO partners from UK Universities and institutes, finance managers at NERC and other funders of NCEO such as space agencies and government departments.


About you:

You have relevant experience in a similar type of role, are comfortable working with financial systems, and are highly proficient in using the Microsoft Office Suite.

You are a team-player who enjoys unravelling complexity with an appreciation of contractual terms and conditions.

You are comfortable working in a fast-paced and often busy environment in which your skillset will evolve, you enjoy taking on new challenges and are keen to develop your financial acumen by delivering a unique financial model.
