Job Purpose

To lead on the design, delivery, and evaluation of Pathfinder a programme of career development opportunities, networks, mentoring and events for postgraduate researchers, and research staff, to support the University's strategic ambition to promote a more positive and career-focused research culture and contribute to the implementation of the Concordat for the Career Development of Researchers principles.

The post-holder will contribute to established frameworks of development activity for PGRs, research staff and research leaders, as well as designing, piloting, evaluating and embedding new career change initiatives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take a leading role in the initiation of, support for, and championing of researcher and alumni communities, and networks including design, recruitment, governance, facilitation, and brokering connections to stakeholders across the University and externally.
  • Take a leading role in the delivery of strategic mentoring programmes for researchers including delivery of training, matching, monitoring, and support for good practice. Working towards building and managing a 'Pathfinder' mentoring platform.
  • Support the development of policies, resources, events and initiatives related to good practice in line management of research staff and good postgraduate supervisory practice in line with national policies and frameworks for practice and with a focus on Careers planning and support.
  • Create and manage project plans, including prioritising to meet targets and stakeholder needs. Identify and pro-actively manage project risks and build effective relationships with key stakeholders and staff groups across the University to ensure projects are delivered within the required timescales, and demonstrate value added.
  • Gather and analyse qualitative and quantitative data from across the University and externally though alumni destinations and make recommendations based on the analysis to inform project design and delivery.
  • Be an effective team player who is cooperative, communicative and gains the trust and support of colleagues and partners through respectful collaboration and building consensus. Contribute to team meetings, planning, joint initiatives and projects, and ongoing development of the team by sharing information in a timely manner and providing transparency in decision making.
  • Represent the Research & Innovation Services Directorate at meetings, external groups, conferences, and seminars to keep up to date with developments and gain and share across the team information/knowledge of working practices in the higher education context.

  • Ensure that the Research Services mission is shared, understood and supported through consistent collation/storage of relevant data and supporting information and the regular updating of Research Services project status reports and portfolio web pages.
  • Proactively identify, undertake, and share opportunities for ongoing professional development, both for yourself and for colleagues the wider Research Culture and Researcher Development portfolio.
  • Perform other duties as requested, consistent with the grade level of the position and agreeing appropriate prioritisation of work with line management or other relevant stakeholders as needed.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/ Qualifications

Essential

A1 Either:
Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) or equivalent, (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related roles


Or:

Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different role(s).

A2 An authoritative and up to date understanding of researcher development within the Higher Education landscape.
A3 Familiarity with theories on adult learning, including virtual learning environments and online training.


Desirable
B1 PhD
B2 Understanding of the role of technology in supporting learning.
