Purpose of the role
Specialist Bridges Inspection and Maintenance contract is a 15 year contract for National Highways to deliver inspection and maintenance works to the M48 Severn Bridge, M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M5 Avonmouth Bridge in the South West of England


Responsible for ensuring annual inspection programme and all inspection reporting is completed in accordance with all relevant technical standards within the relevant specialism / discipline.

Delivery of all the specified inspections and reports on time, within budget and to the quality required.

Responsible for managing welding compliance on SBIM.


The Senior Inspector is responsible for managing a team of bridge inspectors across M48 Severn Bridge, M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M5 Avonmouth Bridge within the relevant specialism (Steel / Concrete structures).

Responsible for planning and delivery of the annual inspection programme of General, Principal and Special Inspections across all three structures.

This includes writing and responsibility for reviewing and submitting inspection reports to National Highways.


Responsible for planning, managing and organising team inspection workload in addition, organise required resource from Maintenance Team with the Bridge Construction Managers to ensure availability of specific resource required to deliver programme e.g.

gantry drivers / MEWP drivers etc.


Responsible for liaising with the rope access manager to ensure rope access programme is planned and organised to support inspection work that requires rope access methods to complete.

Responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant standards relating to welding on the contract and National Highway Sector Scheme 20


What will the role involve?

  • Implement the contractual inspection requirements to fully meet the client specification in accordance with relevant standards and programme;
  • Undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within ability and competence;
  • Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
  • Assist the bridge manager in developing training programmes for junior members of staff
  • Carry out site visits and surveys, inspections and supervise subcontract inspectors;
  • Prepare and check feasibility studies, inspection, assessment and technical reports and other written documents in an appropriate format ensuring compliance with Amey procedures;
  • Comply with the requirements of the Amey Integrated Management System including Health & Safety, Environmental and all other appropriate regulations;
  • Prepare/check design / assessment approach, calculations, drawings and documents;
  • Take line management responsibility for the direction and supervision of junior bridge inspection team members to help ensure timely project delivery is achieved within budget and in accordance with the specification;
  • Engage in client and third party liaison;
  • Support the preparation of bids and delivery of services on other contracts, when required;
  • Undertake the performance appraisals for all reporting staff and support learning and development opportunities including management of team training requirements
  • Take part in the oncall rota to cover emergencies outside of normal working hours as required by operational circumstances
  • Prepare and review weld procedures
  • Manage welding process including verification and conformity checks on materials and ensure all relevant records are kept
  • Inspect completed welds using a variety of nondestructive techniques
  • Identify nonconformances and suggest areas for improvement
  • Ensure compliance with NHSS20
  • Ensure welding work is carried out in accordance with Execution Class
  • Ensure training records and certification are kept up to date
  • Ensure all welding personnel are tested and coded on the relevant procedures

What we are looking for?

Qualifications:


  • Minimum HNC in Civil or Mechanical Engineering;
  • Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer of a relevant professional body (ICE, CIHT or IStructE) desirable but not essential
  • Completed or Working towards Bridge Inspection Certification Scheme (BICS)
  • Qualified Weld Inspector (CSWIP3.0 / 3.1 / 3.2)


  • PCN Level 1/2/

  • IPAF 1A Static Boom desirable but not essential
  • Full clean driving licence

Skills:


  • MUST BE ABLE TO WORK AT HEIGHT CONFIDENTLY
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent problemsolving skills
  • Skill in the fabrication, joining and repair of a variety of metal objects, equipment, fixtures and structures.
Experience

  • 10 years postgraduate experience in bridge inspection of highway or railway structures
  • Awareness of Temporary works
  • Experience of Long span bridges desirable but not essential
Technical competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of power tools, electrical equipment, and manual tools
  • Experience of lifting using mobil
