Salary:
£28,762 - £33,314 per annum (Grade 5). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Purpose
To make and maintain good working relationships with cancer researchers to ensure projects are well supported. To approach and consent cancer patients in Cardiff to donate biosamples to the Wales Cancer Biobank (WCB).

To organise and co-ordinate the collection of tissue and blood samples, to contribute to supporting biosample based research in Wales and worldwide.

To undertake accurate and timely data extraction from medical records to ensure a research ready resource is maintained with complete clinical annotation.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • To undertake research, e.g. by planning, preparing, setting up, conducting and recording the outcome of desktop research and/or patient related questionnaires
  • Actively participate within the group, communicating and presenting the project at meetings, and other recognised avenues as appropriate, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners
  • To contribute to research publications and presentations as required
  • To analyse and communicate complex ideas, concepts and data using appropriate methods and packages
  • To resolve issues and support senior colleagues in devising procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To generate research output and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas as appropriate
  • To provide support in research activities and provide guidance to junior members of staff within the team
  • To maintain an up to date area of specialist knowledge, researching and critically appraising relevant literature to maintain an understanding of policies, procedures and legislation involving the collection of biological samples for research including laboratory protocols, the Human Tissue Act, GCP, NMC code of practice, IATA and DHL transport legislation
  • To identify suitable patients and obtain appropriate informed consent, either in clinics or on the ward, for tissue and blood donation to the biobank; to follow up patients throughout treatment to collect data and further samples, including taking and processing blood samples
  • Liaise with other healthcare professionals including the project lead, surgeons, specialist nurses, ward, theatre and laboratory staff to facilitate sample collection
  • Input relevant patient data on to ISCO and WCB databases and maintain paper records; extract treatment and follow up data from patient
