For the purposes of sponsorship, this is a postdoctoral role under SOC code 2311.


The Post


The post holder will have significant expertise and experience in mathematics teaching and will be registered as a secondary mathematics teacher with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, or eligible for full registration.

They will contribute to the ITE programme both in secondary mathematics and more widely. They will contribute to research across the Faculty. Notably, there are opportunities to collaborate with researchers focusing on curriculum, professional learning, social justice and STEM education.

The mathematics specialist will complement our existing expertise in STEM education and may work with the developing Curriculum Research Network.


Description of Duties
**_
Teaching & Research_**- Engage in individual and collaborative research, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, establish a distinctive programme of research and disseminate results through regular publication in high impact journals, books and conference proceedings

  • Identify appropriate sources of funding, prepare research proposals for funding bodies and manage grants awarded
  • Supervise research students and staff as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Design, teach and assess a range of teaching and learning, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including online/digital programmes where required
  • Contribute to curriculum review and enhancement, in a manner that supports a researchled approach to student learning
  • Participate in the Faculty's international engagement activities as required e.g. delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post

_Teaching & Scholarship_

  • Design, deliver, assess and evaluate a range of teaching and learning, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate, postgraduate including online/digital programmes, where required
  • Contribute to curriculum review and enhancement, in a manner that supports student learning and is underpinned by evidence based scholarly activity
  • Enhance the quality of teaching provision and programme development, drawing on leading practices from the HE sector
  • Contribute to enhancement of the student experience and employability
  • Mentor students and staff as required, providing direction, support and guidance
  • Engage in individual and collaborative pedagogical research and scholarly activity, which aligns to the strategic direction of the University, and disseminate results through regular publication in a manner appropriate to the work
  • Independently, and in collaboration with colleagues, contribute to attract external funding/income for scholarship activities
  • Work to influence the higher education agenda in a specific disciplinary area or teaching and learning more generally
  • Participate in the Faculty's international engagement activities as required e.g. delivering teaching, contributing to joint programmes and recruitment of students
  • Lead, participate and develop networks and collaborations both internally and externally to the Division/Faculty/University
  • Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post

Essential Criteria

Teaching & Research_**
Qualifications:
  • PhD in relevant discipline or close to successful completion or equivalent professional and/or teaching, learning and development experience
Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Established track record of high quality published research
  • Experience of supervising dissertation projects across the range of undergraduate/ postgraduate and of supervising doctoral students
  • Experience of providing high quality teaching across a range of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level preferably including online/digital programmes
  • Experience of designing and delivering course modules
  • Evidence of successful coordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others

_Teaching & Scholarship_

Qualifications:


  • PhD in relevant discipline or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience
  • Higher Education teaching qualification or equivalent e.g. PGCert and/or holding or working towards Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy (HEA)
Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience of designing and delivering excellent learning activities and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level preferably including online/digital programmes
  • Evidence of developing effective learning environments and approaches to student support and guidance
  • Experience or knowledge of approaches to enhance the student experience
  • Evidence of engaging in networks, locally, nationally and interna
