Quant Developer - Solutions Front-Office Technology

The Team

Solutions, a branch of Man Group, specializes in the development and management of portfolios for sophisticated clients, primarily institutional investors such as pension funds and insurance companies.

The business is known for its alternative investment strategies, often leveraging high conviction, investment grade managers, and a variety of hedge fund strategies to create unique solutions with low levels of correlation to traditional equities and bonds.

The Role

The Solutions Front-Office Technology team is responsible for developing and maintaining a suite of software tools that enable Solutions fund managers, quants and investment analysts to:

Monitor performance, exposure and risk of internal and external funds
Perform portfolio construction and backtesting
Automate PMs investment workflows and data visualisation

Our Technology

Our systems are almost all running on Linux and most of our code is in Python, with the full scientific stack: numpy, scipy, pandas, scikit-learn to name a few of the libraries we use extensively.

We implement the systems that require the highest data throughput in Java. For storage, we rely heavily on MongoDB and Oracle.

We use Airflow for workflow management, Kafka for data pipelines, Bitbucket for source control, Jenkins for continuous integration, Grafana + Prometheus for metrics collection, ELK for log shipping and monitoring, Docker + Kubernetes for containerisation, OpenStack for our private cloud, Ansible for architecture automation, and Slack for internal communication.

But our technology list is never static:
we constantly evaluate new tools and libraries.

Technology and Business Skills

Essential

Handson with a strong technical background in software development, data analysis, and financial markets including experience in the Python Quant stack (pandas, numpy, scipy etc.).
A proponent of strong collaborative software engineering techniques and methods: agile development, continuous integration, code review, unit testing, refactoring and related approaches
Proficient on Linux platforms with knowledge of various scripting languages
Strong knowledge of one or more relevant database technologies e.g. Oracle, MongoDB
Familiarity with a variety of programming styles (e.g. OO, functional) and indepth knowledge of design patterns.

Advantageous

An excellent understanding of financial markets and instruments
An understanding of hedge fund and factorbased investing strategies
Practical portfolio construction skills, familiar with a variety of methodologies
QIS experience from an investment bank
Expertise in building distributed systems with servicebased or eventdriven architectures, and concurrent processing
