About the role:


Computing and Mathematics at Derby has a bold vision to deliver an outstanding learning experience to our students, further develop and expand our research capacity and increase our industry engagement in the region and beyond to fulfil targets for Research Excellence Framework and Knowledge Exchange Framework as well as providing the best opportunities to our graduates.

The discipline area is located in the University's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) annex in Markeaton Street, Derby, where staff offices and lab facilities are co-located.

Key investments in the last few years include dedicated data science facilities, a data visualisation 'data cave' and a Virtual Reality (VR) lab as well as mobile VR equipment for teaching and research.

The discipline area is actively engaged in knowledge exchange projects and an active applied research agenda.

Actual hours and days will be described in a 'Schedule of Work'.


Principal accountabilities:


Duties may include any of the following:

  • Formal scheduled delivery of Teaching, Lectures or Workshops
  • Preparation of teaching materials required in the delivery of the above
  • Preparation of Reading Lists
  • Responsibility for keeping of University records, reports or returns as appropriate including marks and notes are submitted to the module leader for assessment boards.
  • Contribution to assessment design as appropriate
  • Marking, moderation and electronic submission of marks as required
  • Supervision of Doctoral Research
  • Responsibility for tutorials
  • Student Support
  • Independent Studies supervision
  • Attendance at the following Boards/Meetings, where it is appropriate and where they can be arranged to fit in with other commitments: Development / training meetings and events; Probation and Development Review; Programme Committees and Subject/Team Meetings; Any relevant meetings associated with internal and/or external periodic scrutiny such as QAA; College Research Committee; College Research Ethics Committee; Assessment Boards
  • To comply with the requirements of Health & Safety, other relevant legislation and University documentation

Essential Criteria:


Qualifications:


  • A first degree in a discipline appropriate to the discipline being taught or equivalent professional experience

Experience:


  • Experience of working, studying, or researching in an area related to the discipline being taught

Skills, knowledge & abilities:


  • Ability to teach at the appropriate level
  • Ability to relate theory to practice
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good presentation skills

Business requirements:


  • Availability to deliver oncampus teaching within the University timetable

Desirable Criteria:


Qualifications:


  • Teaching qualification
  • A PhD, or near to completion of a PhD, in an area related to Mathematics or Applied Mathematics

Experience:


  • Experience of teaching students in an HE context including small group facilitation
