Are you interested in helping to reduce road deaths across West Yorkshire, with an ambition of zero fatalities by 2040? Working with partners on campaigns and communications aimed at making our roads safer and influencing behaviour change?

Combined with working within a team that deals with high profile breaking stories that impact residents across West Yorkshire and potentially have a national impact?


Working to develop a full Communications Strategy to support the overall Vision Zero Strategy as we increase the relevance of road safety messaging to different groups, supporting positive behaviour change.

An opportunity has opened up within the Policing and Crime team and it may be just the job for you.


The communications role will run until March It will involve working with partners on communicating the Vision Zero strategy to the public of West Yorkshire, writing impactful press releases, dealing with press queries around road safety, getting involved in drafting briefings for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime on all things road safety and involving policing and community safety.


You will work with your counterparts in the wider Corporate Communications function and get involved in with the press office, marketing, campaigns and digital.


The Policing and Crime team is made up of one Communications Manager and two press officers, who all work closely together to deliver on the communications for the Mayor Tracy Brabin and her Deputy Alison Lowe, through a variety of mediums ongoing work highlighted in the Police and Crime Plan which you can view here.

Working under pressure, juggling multiple deadlines, working well with others, this job could be a perfect development opportunity if you want to develop your writing skills further.


You will develop your sense of news and current affairs as well as build relationships with partners including West Yorkshire Police, local authority communication leads, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and commissioned partners.


Due to the nature of the role, this position will involve a degree of flexibility, such as involvement in an out of hours rota and occasional travel with the Mayor or Deputy Mayor for media engagements and visits.
