Role Purpose


The role of
Teaching Standards Education Officer has a high profile and impact as a key teaching professional ambassador for GTC Scotland externally.


The role works to explore and engage with the teaching profession and partners, educate about our public policies and, in collaboration with the Accreditation Quality Officer, ensure we implement our standards and accreditation related policies, so that trust in the teaching profession and GTC Scotland is maintained and enhanced.


This role supports GTC Scotland to deliver our statutory functions and meet the needs of the teaching profession, our partners and the public.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Proactively deliver the exploration, enactment, engagement and embedding of Professional Standards, showing awareness of our internal and external education offer to promote, value and support trust in the teaching profession.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate targeted education as part of onboarding new registration groups and attend and manage partnership groups as required, representing GTC Scotland's role and functions.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate universal and targeted education, through partnership with others to ensure that GTC Scotland's functions are understood, that the teaching profession's professionalism is supported, enhanced and managed through employers and relevant bodies and trust in the teaching profession is maintained and grown by embedding our public policy (e.g. Professional Standards, COPAC, the framework for teacher competence, etc) through our field work, working in partnership with our Policy function to enhance and create policy in line with our policy making process.
  • Plan, develop and evaluate meaningful and informed resources for the teaching profession, sourcing and procuring services when required, to ensure that effective gathering of information from partners and the teaching profession informs GTC Scotland's work to continuously strive to achieve best practice.
  • Educate and encourage commitment to ongoing learning so that standards for teaching are strengthened, using our voice to speak up for high standards, helping instill trust in the profession.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate external education work across all our functions acting as an ambassador for GTC Scotland ensuring our role and impact is understood through effective engagement with international partners, higher education institutes, employers such as local authorities, colleges and independent schools (and potential future employers), national bodies such as educational agencies, employers' associations, professional associations and regional improvement collaboratives, including in relation to teacher workforce supply and promoting equality and diversity in the teaching profession.
  • Continuously seek to evidence and improve our organisational performance and impact in the area of Teaching Standards and Accreditation Quality, influencing both internally and externally to make positive change happen.
  • Deliver appropriate support to those seeking accreditation, act as servicing officer for Accreditation panels as required and take required action following accreditation, as coordinated by the Accreditation Quality Officer.
  • Lead, manage and motivate temporary Education and Standards employees as required.
  • Perform other duties that may be reasonably required within the scope of your role as assigned to you.

Qualified at SCQF level 9 (teaching qualification) aligning with registration with GTC Scotland
