The post holder will provide the necessary maintenance skills to ensure the safe and continuous operation of the building structures, internal fabric, services and external grounds within the Atlas portfolio of properties and those organisations that have contractual arrangements with either Atlas, or Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The post holder shall be able to demonstrate leadership & ownership skills and will be multi-skilled on work across a range of traditional modern and complex building structures and to carry out the majority of non-routine and also routine works.


The post holder shall demonstrate assessed competence, achieved through training and experience, to undertake the role of Building Operative and must be able to fault find within the various types of traditional and modern relatively complex construction techniques.


The post holder will be required to work on a regular basis on wards and in patient environments and as such, please be aware that with this role you may require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), further information will be provide if you are successful for interview.


The post holder will provide an effective and efficient maintenance repair and improvement service to a high quality on a full range of building structures fabric, fixtures, finishes, services and civil engineering works to the above stated properties within their trade discipline and other disciplines within their capability, and will involve the use of instrumentation, plant equipment, tools, and machines.

  • Carry out maintenance work to floors, cladding, doors, fire seals, ironmongery, closers, roof lights, hand rails, grab rails, wall protections, forming of minor concrete/tarmac works for roads footpaths, duct ways, car park, drains etc. within a safe environment and to a high quality across the full range of building fabric.
  • Manufacture and fitting of various support systems, building cupboards, shelves, benches, carrying out modifications to same; assembly of flat pack furniture, and manufacture of unique furniture items. To have skill and ability to gain access to locked rooms and premises without damaging doors, in order to repair locks, etc. work on UPVC, metal and timber doors/windows.
  • Civil engineering works such as external fences, brickwork, plastering, gates, signage, forming of minor concrete/tarmac works for roads, footpaths, duct ways, car parks, drains etc.
  • Structural works and installation of walls, doors, studded partitions, mirrors, sanitary fittings, curtain rails and tracks, ceiling tiles, ironmongery, bath, panels, electronic door closers and locks.
  • Work in accordance with the requirements of statute, technical guidance and codes of practice.
  • Be conversant with the relevant latest edition of building regulations, health and safety regulations, in relation to the works being carried out.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance inspections and commissioning tests in accordance with Atlas procedures and schedules.
  • Carry pager/radio/telephone/communication tool to provide response to any incident that the Maintenance Supervisor may wish to redirect the member of staff to any emergency situation, both whilst on site and when providing on call service.
  • Have the ability to interpret technical detailed manuals, fault diagnose and repair Trust building facilities, assist in commissioning, problem solve new services and communicate technical knowledge to others.
  • Respond to and liaise with other members of the Atlas' staff who request assistance.
  • Be able to drive appropriate Atlas vehicles for transporting personnel or equipment.
  • Be prepared to work in hazardous areas, confined spaces and on contaminated external and internal fabric (i.e. Mortuary, theatres and laboratories) taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment in accordance with Atlas policy and safe working procedures.
  • Identify, plan and prioritise own work load and actively participate in the operation of the performance management information system, including the completion of all paperwork required by the scheme in timely manner.
