We are looking for a Risk Assurance Lead to provide leadership and support across the Chief Information and Transformation Office (CITO) function on best practice risk management, assurance and governance and be a key agent of culture change to embed robust Risk Management for projects and programmes of change across the Cumberland Building Society (CBS).


The role
Reporting to the Head of Change, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Performing internal Risk Assurance to CITO Change Delivery, providing insight and creating value to optimise CITO/Change Management Office (CMO) performance.
  • Supporting the business in the identification and management of Programme and Project delivery risks and risk events.
  • Promoting, reinforcing and embedding a risk management culture across the business, supporting, educating and training employees so that that they understand the different types of risk relevant to their role and their individual accountability (working in partnership with the risk champions).
  • Challenging the effectiveness of project delivery risk controls and frameworks.
  • Conducting assurance on effectiveness of Programme/ Project Risk management.
  • Working with the Risk and Audit functions to create, manage and maintain managerial supervision of governance, policies and standards to ensure these are communicated effectively.
  • Coordinating key project risk management processes, e.g. Project and Programme Risk Workshops, Risk Reviews, risk incident reporting, collection of risk event data, management of major risk events, completion of management audits and audit action plans, trend analysis.
  • Acting as main point of contact for CITO function for second line and internal oversight and committee meetings.
  • Proposing and monitoring programme/project and operational risk key risk indicators (KRIs) both leading and lagging.
  • Providing a consolidated view of risks and risk management across the whole change delivery roadmap.
  • Coordinating risk support for new projects and propositions.
  • Supporting the follow up of internal audit recommendations.
  • Providing the appropriate level of reporting such as compilation of monthly risk dashboards, summaries, SLT and Board Reports.
  • Ensuring regular recognition of colleagues across CITO departments when positive risk behaviours are evidenced.

About you
You will have 6-9 years' experience working in a related field of Programme Management and Risk Assurance, along with the following:

  • MSP/Prince/APM & Project Risk Management qualifications preferred but not essential.
  • Good experience and knowledge in business process, internal control, and risk management.
  • Strong understanding of financial services, including awareness of relevant regulation and regulatory bodies.
  • In depth knowledge of Risk Management Frameworks and its constituent parts.
  • Experience of embedding best practice programme/project risk management with a good understanding of concepts, tools and frameworks.
  • Desire to further develop the control environment, bringing new ideas and promoting operational risk awareness to ensure the operational risk framework continues to be firmly embedded in the business.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build and sustain relationships with the business and key stakeholders, as well as working 'on the ground' with people across all areas.
  • Effective influencing skills and the ability to challenge with confidence, as well as to positively develop culture and people.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write clear and wellstructured reports with an attention to detail. Preparing concise and accurate documents, leveraging and utilising MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point) and data analytics (Power BI, Tableau) to complete related project deliverables, as necessary.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, able to work independently and as a team
  • Significant experience of communicating to senior management.
  • Ability to accurately convert data into insight and information for control, reporting, and decisionmaking purposes and the rapid identification of key issues, themes and trends.
  • Has an interest in learning new things with a 'can do' attitude.
  • Exhibit a deep understanding of project management skills, including understanding project plans, budgets, dependencies, project RAIDDAs and deliverable schedules.
