Main objectives of role:


  • To be responsible for the strategic development of all aspects of Human Resources across the Trust, ensuring alignment of policies, procedures and HR administration.
  • To coordinate the work of the centralised HR team, any local HR administration and any external HR provider to secure a coordinated and effective HR support function to all schools within the Trust.
  • To report effectively to senior management and governors/trustees to provide assurance on HR practice and to drive strategic review and decision making.

Main duties

  • Work with the CFO (or COO when appointed) to ensure that staffing contracts and amendments are reflected accurately within financial systems (budget software and forecasting systems) with immediacy.
  • Work with the CFO (or COO when appointed) to ensure that any staffing restructures are preapproved before being advertised; and where applicable (per scheme of delegation) have been through the appropriate governance structures via business case if there are implications of redundancy or TUPE. This will include considering and proposing different work practices/staffing structures and overall organisation design across the Trust. This will be with reference to inter Trust and external benchmarking data.
  • Work with the CFO (or COO when appointed) to implement efficient systems to provide timely and accurate staffing information in relation to statutory and Trustee requirements (for example: Internal management reporting, Financial Statements, Annual Accounting Returns, ONS, Gender Pay Gap, Trade Union Time)
  • Review and develop Trust wide HR strategies including but not limited to: CPD, recruitment and retention, reward and recognition, performance management, personal development, health and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to any due diligence processes as the Trust expands as per its aspirational growth plans
  • To lead the implementation of any HR software packages and their ongoing development
  • Contribute to the development of common reporting processes at Trust and school level that keep the Corporate Team, Trustees and governors informed on performance indicators such as absences, staff turnover, performance appraisal, mandatory training, reward and tracking of HR issues.
  • Line management of the Corporate HR team and provision of support, coaching and training.
  • Provide support, coaching and training to leaders across the Trust on people management and implications of policy and strategy.
  • Effectively lead and deploy the HR team in determining the appropriate strategic approach to case management (complaints, capability, proceedings, conduct and probationary reviews,
safeguarding issues, absences etc. maintaining accurate and up to date records). Take a lead role in handling any complex employee issues, utilising the support of external HR advisors as required.

  • To effectively support SLT in schools.
  • Provide expert knowledge and project management support on any change management situations that arise within the Trust, particularly in relation to academy transfers into the Trust, including but not limited to, due diligence, restructure, redundancies and TUPE.
  • Review and develop all HR administrative procedures across the trust to ensure effectiveness through consistency of branding and approach, efficiency benchmarking, the implementation and effective use of HR software, ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Work with the CEO and CFO on the design and implementation of any new pay and reward schemes, including job evaluation and equal pay, whilst minimising the risks where this is needed to ensure parity across the Trust and to meet statutory requirements.
  • Offer solutions to harmonisation of pay across the trust which, where possible, have positive financial impact for the trust
  • Build effective relationships with all staff (fulfilling an HR support role) in all schools across the trust, including directing work as appropriate in liaison with any Business Operations Managers and Headteachers.
  • Manage and evaluate the effectiveness of outsourced services utilised by the Trust including HR legal provision, HR software, recruitment/advertising provision, training platforms, Occupational Health services and other health & wellbeing initiatives such as health cash plans.
  • Support the CEO in the effective management of the Trust's JCNC and maintain a harmonious employee relations environment.
  • Lead Trade union meetings and negotiations
  • Develop and implement audit procedures which ensure robust safeguarding expectations

are adhered to in relation to pre-employment checks in school including DBS checks, identity checking and work permits for all staff, volunteers, trustees and governors.

This will include post-employment protocols and ensuring a full and effective training programme for all staff.
