An exciting opportunity has arisen for a press officer to join St Austell Brewery's marketing and communications teams.

This role involves telling stories about the people who work at St Austell Brewery, its beer brands, and pubs across the South West.

You are an excellent communicator with great writing skills and experience working in an in-house or agency role. You have media-handling experience and are happy taking a proactive approach and working in a fast-paced environment.


Staying on top of the news agenda, you are confident in pitching feature ideas and in your element liaising with journalists across the board (regional, national, trade, and influencers).


We have recently undertaken a restructure of our marketing department, aimed at continuing to support the growth of St Austell Brewery.

That's why we're investing in building a strong team of experts who will work together to create innovative and effective campaigns that will drive growth and build our brand.


What will the job entail day to day - and what will you be responsible for?

  • Drafting press releases and feature ideas and pitching proactive story opportunities to the media.
  • Liaising with journalists (including national, trade, and regional titles, broadcast media, and influencers) and building strong relationships. Arranging and hosting press events (this may involve occasional travel outside of Cornwall).
  • Arranging press trips for media, to secure coverage that promotes St Austell Brewery's managed pub estate, Visitor Centre and breweries.
  • Organising product samples and sending creative mailers to key journalists and influencers to promote our brands.
  • Keeping uptodate target media lists and having a thorough knowledge of regular features to pitch for (eg. hotel reviews and product placement slots).
  • Organising media events; inviting press and coordinating press invites to relevant company events.
  • Keeping an uptodate list of relevant business awards and supporting with compiling entries, supporting materials and subsequently raising the profile (if and when we win) Monitoring media coverage and preparing weekly summaries / monthly reports on key messages and PR activity. Identifying reactive comment opportunities (across national, regional, and trade).
  • Working with the marketing and communications team to ensure consistent internal and external messaging, across all channels. Being open to completing tasks which may fall outside of your role/ remit.

About you:


  • Experience of working with the media in an agency or an inhouse PR, marketing, or communications role.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in food and drink, hospitality, or the travel industry would be advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with good attention to detail and a creative flair for producing engaging copy.
  • Organised, resilient, positive, and calm under pressure. You enjoy multitasking and have a flexible approach.
  • Team player with welldeveloped people skills listens to others, actively contributes, and shows commitment to building relationships (internally and externally).
  • Commercial acumen and awareness of wider business issues and opportunities when making decisions.
