Description

Job Advert

  • We are looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant to join the Houseley lab at the Babraham Institute to work on epigenetic and metabolic dysregulation in ageing. This person will join our research programme aimed at suppressing ageing pathology by manipulating diet and metabolism, using yeast as a model system. By mutating proteins at the interphase between metabolism and epigenetics, we are altering the ageing trajectory of cells to improve health whilst maintaining typical cellular functions.
This exciting project will use cutting edge technologies to characterize the metabolic and epigenetic mechanisms that facilitate healthy ageing, providing unprecedented insights into the causes of maladaptive ageing

Techniques will include:

general molecular biology, flow cytometry (spectral and imaging), generation and analysis of mRNA-sequencing libraries, mass spectrometry, CRISPR-based manipulations, yeast ageing and purification, among various other techniques.

This post will also involve a laboratory management component to support the work of the Houseley group, including lab organisation, reagent and equipment purchasing, and Health and Safety oversight.

This role reports to Dr Jon Houseley, a tenured group leader in the Epigenetics programme at the Babraham Institute.

Key areas of Responsibility

  • Primary project involving the characterization of our healthy ageing yeast. This will include the design, implementation and interpretation of experiments. (70%)
  • Lab management (organisation, purchasing, ordering, stock taking, administration) (20%)
  • Health and Safety oversight which will include the completion of COSHH forms and working as the lab safety point person (10%)

This is a limited term appointment with funding for this post expected to be available for a period of 2 years.

The Institute has joined the Technician Commitment initiative, which is a commitment to support the recognition, visibility, sustainability and career development of our research support community, which includes the BSU, Scientific Facilities, Computing, Stores & Purchasing, Technical Services, Health & Safety and the Research Assistant communities.
