Assessment & Review Officer. The development of Inclusion Somerset within Children's Services is continuing to restructure the Statutory SEND Team as we continue to improve our service to support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

What will I be doing?
We're working to improve the lives of children in Somerset - and you'll be a key part of that.


As a member of the Statutory SEND Team your day to day work will involve supporting in the delivery of the statutory functions of the Local Authority in respect of the Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs); in addition, you will be required to use your knowledge and skills to support partners to meet the wider needs of children and young people with these statutory processes.


You will be part of a strong and ambitious team, with inclusion at the heart of service as we support children and young people and their families.

The role of the Assessment and Review Officer is to ensure that children and young people who have SEND in Somerset have their needs met in a holistic way within their local communities and live the lives that they want to lead.


  • Coordinating the EHC assessment process including leading collaborative outcome meetings and drafting EHC Plans
  • Processing EHC Annual Review reports and amending EHC Plans
  • Attending early Annual Review Meetings and leading those for children and young people who are electively home educated or not in employment, education or training
  • Working collaboratively with educational settings and partners
  • Communicating with young people and families through the EHC assessment and review processes

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?
We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be.

But it will really help if you have experience of working with young people and have an understanding and ability to engage with young people who have complex needs and may struggle to engage.

You should have good verbal and written communication with a range of audiences including young people and you will need to be able to write and deliver basic reports and presentations.

We are looking for someone who has

  • Excellent Written and Verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Including Word, Excel and TEAMS
  • A knowledge of SEND and a willingness to learn SEND Legislation
  • Positive mindset with the ability to manage changing priorities
  • Experience of managing a busy workload or working to tight deadlines
  • Excellent organisation skills
We are a strong and supportive team with fantastic peer support and a supportive management team. Somerset County Council offers progression opportunities to senior assessment review officer and Level 4 Qualification training relating to SEND.
