About Us

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life.

We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats.

Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe.

A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

Job description:

The Role
As a Trainee Finance Officer, you'll be offered a structured learning pathway to become a valued industry professional.

Over three years, you'll achieve a recognised Finance qualification whilst contributing to the Finance functions at the UK's Intelligence Services.

And through your work, you'll enable the delivery of our organisational strategies and ensure that public money is spent efficiently and effectively.

You'll be supported to study for an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 4 qualification while rotating in a number of exciting roles in different teams.

If you're successful in your annual AAT exams and other targets, such as achieving specific performance goals and objectives, you'll have the opportunity to progress, both in grade and salary each year.

Pay increases could look like:
Year 1 - £26,441 - £29,237

Year 2 - £30,257 - £32,659

Year 3 - £34,777 - £37,281

All of this is dependent on your performance and progress with your exams. But don't worry, you won't do this alone.

With a team of other trainees, a dedicated mentor and a 'buddy' with experience of studying the AAT, you'll have a great network of people to help you.

That support doesn't stop there, our new remote working hub means there may also be opportunities for some volunteers to travel around our UK offices to collaborate with teams and build relationships with fellow Trainee Finance Officers.

When you're not working and learning on the job, you'll be studying in a classroom-based environment, with the option of virtual training.

In addition to studying for the AAT level 4 qualification, you'll gain experience in:

  • Financial monthly and end of year processes
  • Processing payments and employees' claims
  • Dealing with a range of queries and identifying and resolving issues
  • Reviewing accounting documents, and producing routine reports and summaries for management teams

As you gain practical experience of Finance operations at MI5 and develop your analytical skills, you'll become a valuable part of our team.

And once you've finished your qualification, we'll help you look forward to your next steps. You'll have opportunities for promotion, and the option to become a Certified Chartered Accountant.

With plenty of training and further development opportunities available, this role offers you a way to build an exciting long-term career in Finance.

Person specification:

About You
A naturally inquisitive problem solver, you've got a head for figures. You'll bring a passion for developing a career in Finance and a real enthusiasm for learning. And you're someone who thrives in a team and who loves working with, and learning from others.

You'll share our values of integrity, respect and creativity, and our mission to have a positive impact on the UK.

You don't need to be a certain 'type' of person to work here - we need all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds to protect the UK.

You'll already have GCSEs in English and maths at A-C/9-4 (or equivalent), and some experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

As the scheme begins
in October 2024, you'll need to have completed your studies by then and be ready to join us full time.

Please note that if you've started or already completed the AAT qualification, you won't be eligible.
