    Default job background
    Description
    Managing Quantity Surveyor (MQS)
We are a leading self-delivering civil engineering company, renowned for its expertise in delivering complex infrastructure projects. Our diverse portfolio spans highways, utilities, and major civil engineering works, and we pride ourselves on providing innovative, sustainable solutions while maintaining a focus on quality and client satisfaction.
As part of our ongoing growth and commitment to excellence, we are seeking a highly motivated Managing Quantity Surveyor (MQS) to lead the commercial and financial aspects of our projects and contribute to the successful delivery of our diverse portfolio.
    The Role
As the Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will oversee the commercial management of civil engineering projects from initial planning through to final completion. You will ensure that each project remains within budget, meets financial targets, and is delivered on schedule, while managing risks and contractual obligations. This is a senior position that requires a high level of commercial acumen, leadership, and a deep understanding of the civil engineering sector.
    In this role, you will:
    • Lead and Develop a Team: Manage and mentor a team of quantity surveyors, ensuring high performance and continued professional development. You will provide strategic direction and ensure that your team is equipped with the necessary resources and support to perform effectively.
    • Commercial Oversight: Take full responsibility for the financial and commercial management of multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring each project is delivered on time and within budget while maintaining profitability.
    • Cost Control & Forecasting: Prepare and review detailed cost estimates, budgets, and cash flow forecasts for projects. You will proactively monitor and control project costs, ensuring they remain within approved budgets and identifying any potential issues early on.
    • Contract Management & Negotiation: Lead contract administration activities, including the negotiation and management of contracts (such as NEC, JCT, or bespoke), ensuring compliance with agreed terms and resolving any disputes that arise. You will work closely with the legal department and other stakeholders to ensure effective risk management and mitigate financial exposure.
    • Procurement & Subcontractor Management: Oversee the procurement process, ensuring that suppliers and subcontractors are selected efficiently and in line with company policies. You will manage subcontractor agreements, payment schedules, and performance, ensuring value for money while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
    • Risk Management: Identify and assess potential risks associated with projects, developing and implementing strategies to mitigate these risks. You will be responsible for providing proactive solutions to avoid delays and cost overruns.
    • Reporting & Communication: Prepare regular financial reports and cost analyses for senior management and stakeholders, ensuring that all parties are kept informed of project progress, budget performance, and key milestones. You will present financial summaries and provide recommendations to ensure projects stay on track.
    • Value Engineering: Champion value engineering initiatives across projects, identifying opportunities to reduce costs while preserving quality and meeting client requirements. You will work closely with the design and project teams to implement cost-effective solutions.
    • Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders. You will be responsible for managing expectations, delivering exceptional service, and ensuring that projects meet the highest standards of client satisfaction.
    Requirements
To excel in this role, you will need:
    • Experience: Significant experience as a Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering sector, with a strong track record in managing large-scale infrastructure projects.
    • Education: A degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Membership in RICS or similar professional body is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT) and a thorough understanding of civil engineering project management.
    • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities, with experience managing and developing a team of quantity surveyors.
    • Commercial Acumen: A deep understanding of financial management, cost control, and procurement within the civil engineering industry.
    • Software Proficiency: Competence with industry-standard software, such COINS, or similar project management and cost estimation tools.
    • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex commercial and contractual issues.
    • Attributes: Highly organised, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    What We Offer
    • Competitive Salary: A highly competitive salary based on your experience and qualifications.
    • Comprehensive Benefits: A comprehensive benefits package, including pension, health insurance, and more.
    • Career Progression: Opportunities for career growth and advancement within a growing, dynamic company.
    • Challenging Projects: The opportunity to lead high-profile civil engineering projects that have a lasting impact on infrastructure.
    • Supportive Environment: A collaborative and supportive work environment where your expertise and contributions are valued.
    How to Apply
If you are a driven, experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor looking for the next step in your career, we would love to hear from you.
