The Migration and Borders (M&B) Group guides the UK's immigration, borders and citizenship system, to ensure it is run in a coherent, end to end manner, providing great customer service and firm but fair controls, in line with Ministerial objectives.

It works collaboratively with relevant Capabilities in the Home Office, notably Borders and Enforcement and Customer Service who are delivering the front-line services.

M&B Group consists of four directorates reporting to the Director General:
Borders, Visitors& International Migration; Migration and Citizenship; Asylum, Enforcement and Protection; Strategy and Systems Leadership.

The Role of a Project Management Support Officer Ultimately, you will help ensure the optimal delivery of the Portfolio's strategic objectives in line with government priorities through the analysis of a range of information and engagement with programme andproject stakeholders.

You can also expect to be able to shape the work of the new Hub Portfolio management function as it develops, and work in a friendly and supportive multi-disciplinary team.


Typical Role Responsibilities:

Responsible for the oversight of a Portfolio of programmes or projects that contribute to the delivery of departmental or business area objectives.

Your focus will be on providing insight, information and support that strengthens portfolio governance and enables prioritisation decisions and effective allocation of resources across the portfolio.

Your work will help ensure the optimal delivery of departmental/business strategic objectives in line with government priorities through the analysis of a range of information sources and engagement with programme and project stakeholders and converting thisinto informed insights using appropriate reporting and visualisation methods.

Governance & Reporting -Coordinate reporting from projects and provide analysis of performance into a single authoritative Portfolio pack that will go to Ministers and senior officials as required.

You will contribute to the secretariat for governance boards.

People & Leadership - Support the Portfolio Manager to communicate and build commitment to a shared vision and sense of purpose.

Planning, Scheduling & Resourcing - Maintain portfolio delivery map and critical path to monitor project progress. Recognise and track interdependencies across change projects.
Risk & Opportunity Management - Identify and monitor portfolio risks (threats and opportunities) and escalate as appropriate.
Stakeholder Management - Manage and engage with a wide range of stakeholders across the Portfolio.
Benefits Management - Help develop mechanisms for measuring benefits.

Essential skills:

See the bigger picture; to identify and manage dependencies, break down complex problems and identify the underlying issues, gaps, and opportunities.

Programme and Project Management skills - Whilst you need not have a formal qualification you will bring considerable experience of working in a PPM or Portfolio environment, comfortable with the core principles and skills, able to produce dashboards, risklogs and dependency maps etc.


Effective Communication:
Comfortable working with management information and data to produce effective summaries for Ministers and senior officials. Ability to critically analyse and revise products, tailored to Ministerial and SRO preferences.

Experience of working in a fast-paced environment, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to quickly draft clear concise summaries on complex issues.

Manage a busy workload to deliver to tight deadlines and priorities, including by working through others and prioritising effectively.

You will bring a real skill for collaborating and working with and through others, able to commission and drive work effectively and work with a range of teams to get results.

You will need to develop close working relationships with colleagues across the immigrationsystem.

You may have up to 2 staff under your management chain and we would expect you to set a clear direction for staff and place a real emphasis on their learning and development.

You will bring either knowledge of Migration and Borders or be expected to build a general understanding of cross-system illegal migration issues quickly.
