The Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Human, Animal and Environment Relations, to start on 1 September 2023 or as soon thereafter as possible.

The Department values traditional research on macro

  • Excellent first degree and a doctorate (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent) in a relevant aspect of archaeology or cognate fields.
  • Internationally outstanding research in terms of publications and projects, commensurate with the stage of career.
  • Ability to initiate and engage in international collaborations commensurate with career stage.
  • Evidence of ability to teach broadly in archaeology, environmental archaeology and related fields, as well as to develop and teach specialist courses at undergraduate and graduate level in their field of expertise.
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Department and University as a whole.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with academic colleagues and support staff.

  • A proposal for a specialist 16 lecture course aimed at final year undergraduate and masters students.
  • A curriculum vitae including an uptodate list of publications
  • The names and contact details of THREE referees.


Shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit two samples of published work or extracts of published work totalling no more than 20,000 words in length.

Applicants invited for interview will be asked to make a presentation on their research and give a short teaching sample lecture on a specified topic, will meet staff and students individually and in groups, and will have an interview with the Appointments Committee.

Interviews will take place in Cambridge at the end of April 2023.
