Job Introduction

As a Learning Support Worker supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), you will play a crucial role in providing essential support and assistance to help students thrive in their learning environment.

Collaborating closely with teaching staff and other professionals, you will contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive educational experience for children and young adults with SEN.

Main Responsibilities

As a Learning Support Worker, your responsibilities will revolve around enabling students with SEN to fully participate in educational activities and achieve their learning goals.

While the specifics of the role may vary depending on the individual needs and requirements of each student, here are some general responsibilities you may encounter:


  • Assisting the provision of oneonone or small group support to children or young adults with SEN, both inside and outside the classroom, to help them access and engage in learning activities effectively.
  • Assisting children or young adults with their personal care needs, if required, ensuring their comfort and wellbeing throughout the school day.
  • Collaborating with teachers and educational staff to implement individualized learning plans and strategies tailored to each child's unique needs.
  • Adapting teaching materials and resources to make them accessible and suitable for children or young adults with different learning styles and abilities.
  • Assisting with the use of specialized equipment or assistive technologies that facilitate learning and communication for children or young adults with SEN.
  • Monitoring and recording the progress and achievements of children or young adults, providing feedback to teachers and parents to inform further support strategies.
  • Promoting and fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, encouraging social interaction, independence, and selfconfidence among individuals with SEN.
  • Supporting children or young adults during transitions between activities, classrooms, or school settings, ensuring their safety and emotional wellbeing.
  • Collaborating with external professionals, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, or psychologists, to implement recommended interventions and therapies.
  • Actively participating in training and professional development opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills in supporting children with SEN.
  • One of the duties that may be required as a Learning Support Worker is to assist individuals on day trips and shopping trips.
  • Be committed to work a minimum of 16 hours per week
  • Relevant experience working with children or young people with SEN, ideally within an educational or care setting.
  • A genuine empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by people with SEN, along with a patient and supportive approach.
  • Good knowledge of different learning needs and strategies to support people with SEN, including specific conditions or disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with students, teachers, parents, and other professionals.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively in a dynamic educational environment.
  • A collaborative mindset, working well as part of a team, while also being capable of working independently and taking initiative when needed.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the varying needs and demands of different students and situations.
  • A commitment to continuous learning and professional development, staying updated with current best practices and approaches in SEN education.
