This role has a starting salary of £19,560 per annum, based on a 36 hour working week.

This role is a 24 month Fixed Term apprenticeship opportunity.

We are very excited to be recruiting
Business Administrator Level 3 Apprentice for the dynamic customer facing
School Appeals Team, part of Democratic Services at Surrey County Council.

About Us

When parents do not get a place at a school they applied for they have the legal right to appeal to an independent appeal panel.

The School Appeals Team is responsible for organising those appeals for most schools in Surrey and a number from neighbouring boroughs.

You will be part of this team made up of office based staff, home based clerks and a large team of volunteers who make the decisions on appeals.

We provide information and advice to schools, some of whom have little experience of the process; and to residents who are often anxious and upset and often their 1st experience of the process.

We therefore deal with a wide range of people from all sectors of the community.

Professional, high quality customer care is our guiding principle and we also have to work within statutory guideline and deadlines.

You will be based at Dakota in Weybridge and due to the nature of the role it is mainly office based.

There is the option for some home working depending on work need, this will be discussed with your line manager.

What you will be doing
We want this apprenticeship to be an opportunity for you to gain experience across a wide range of tasks putting you in the best position to succeed in your apprenticeship qualification and take the first steps on your exciting career journey

The great thing about School Appeals is that no day is ever the same and out motto is "Always expect the unexpected".

In this role, you will;

  • After getting to grips with our systems, you'll be inputting appeals forms as received in line with office process to start the process
  • Working alongside our great team on appeal organisation and administration, helping ensure statutory guidelines and deadlines are met
  • Working with the Appeals Manager to help organise home to school transport reviews

In the words of our outgoing apprentice "If you are looking for the perfect balance of a friendly, personable team that supports you but gives you responsibility and trust to work on your own initiative - this is it.

I came into this role with no experience whatsoever. I now leave confident in myself and my own abilities. This is all thanks to the consistent support of the Team."

The learning side of your apprenticeships will be delivered by
Surrey Adult Learning with workshops taking place once a month and taking place face to face.

As you progress through your course, you'll have one to ones with training assessors between once and week and once a month dependant on the needs of the learner.

These take place virtually on MS Teams.

On average, you'll spend 4 days a week working and learning on the job and 1 day a week studying and completing work towards your qualification which will be the equivalent of 2 A-Levels.

As your qualification comes to an end and you begin to turn your eye to the future, we have a fantastic support programme in place that will put you in the best position to take the next step on your exciting career journey.

Our desire is for all our apprenticeships to be the first step on a long & successful career journey within SCC.

  • Describe a team project or group activity you were involved in. What was your role in the team? How did you contribute to the overall success of the team? Did you come up against any obstacles? How did you overcome them?
  • A large part of this role will be dealing directly with customers. What do you think are three core skills needed to ensure good customer service? How will each of those qualities help you deal with queries, leaving the customer feeling that they have been dealt with professionally and fairly?
