Working on site at Heysham, within our Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) department, you'll form part of a strong team that delivers independent assurance of compliance and facilitates improvements in nuclear, environment, industrial safety and Security.

This is an incredibly diverse and demanding role covering all aspects of the business at Heysham 1, including the provision of advice to senior station management on how culture, behaviour and everyday working practices affect operational safety performance.

You'll support the station by providing independent oversight of the execution of business processes including oversight of Emergency Arrangements and Operations Duly Authorised Persons.


We're looking for you to come with us on the journey of defueling, decommissioning and eventually transition, playing a crucial role in the independent assurance of compliance and facilitating improvements in all aspects of safety.

You will be based on site, available to observe plant operations and readily interact with personnel to establish performance standards.

This position is offered as full time, with another opportunity for the same role also available at our Torness power station.


Pay, benefits and culture


We can offer a competitive salary from £64,908 - £84,892 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Nuclear Generation Company Agreement.

You'll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you'll be doing


As the internal regulator for our sites, we strive to be influencers in the business, demonstrating role model behaviours related to safety and compliance and representing a passion for nuclear safety.

This is an incredibly diverse and demanding role covering all aspects of the business at Heysham 1 or Torness, including the provision of advice to senior station management on how culture, behaviour and everyday working practices affect operational safety performance.


You'll be carrying out day-to-day assessments of nuclear operations and plant state, on-site inspections, reviews, and data analysis to identify shortfalls and adverse nuclear assurance trends, as well as the instigation of necessary improvements.

This is with the aim of ensuring the station remains compliant with its legal obligations and continues to improve its safety performance.

You will have experience of nuclear Operations (being a current or previous Duly Authorised Person or equivalent experience or training e.g. military) and will develop into the role of Independent Nuclear Safety Reviewer (INSR).

The INSR role involves a daily independent assessment of the status of nuclear safety, using independent sources to challenge the station's nuclear safety performance, ensuring defence in depth is optimised.


Who you are
We're looking for you to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Be happy to work full time, on site for this role.
  • Experience of nuclear operations (possibly being a current or previous Duly Authorised Person or equivalent experience or training e.g. military)
  • Preferably 5+ years track record of implementing, advising or regulating SSHE arrangements within the nuclear, or other engineering orientated and highly regulated, industry (including defence)
  • An ability to think 'outside of the box' to identify trends, behaviours and insights that could be effective at helping improve SSHE performance
  • Good analytical skills to support critical reviews of performance
  • Clear, concise communication skills to ensure effective delivery of verbal or written feedback
  • Ability to build relationships and team working at all levels in order to establish networks and optimise their use for influencing
  • The character to deliver difficult messages under potentially challenging situations
  • A proven track record of liaising with external SSHE regulators would be an advantage.
