This role is based at Alderley Park, with the flexibility to work remotely for part of the working week.

Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) is a national facility connecting the UK community to accelerate innovative drug discovery.

We provide unique scientific capabilities and act as a gateway to UK resources and expertise, supporting UK SMEs to drive the development and industrialisation of new approaches for the discovery of new medicines.

By validating new ways of discovering medicines and driving key talent and expertise across the sector, we will support the UK life sciences industry, SMEs and innovators to deliver growth for the UK economy and maintain the UK's heritage position as a global leader in medicines.

Role purpose


This is a newly created role where you will support the Chief Commercial Officer in our newly-formed investment team with your focus on contributing to building the next generation of Life Science companies.


As the Venture Building Lead, you will help convert innovation from within MDC into building disruptive new divisions for our existing business or help incubate and ultimately scale a new stand-alone business.

In both contexts, you will start with a strong mandate for innovation and seed teams, both with MDC colleagues and from our community and assemble a strong interim leadership team to operate the new entity.


You will leverage your experience in defining and leading science-led innovation and work daily alongside colleagues, helping create a vision and road map for a new business, product or service line.

You'll architect the future of these enterprises and be at the centre of innovation as you help establish a functioning organization.

Your role will, hence, be a mix of venture leader, entrepreneur in residence as well as C-suite type leadership for the businesses you help create.

You will lead multiple cross-functional teams of both professionals from the science and commercial fields with the view to build a sustainable business.


We're looking for an individual to be a key member of our newly-formed investment team, able to partner across the business, with strong communication skills and whose broad scientific understanding, combined with a strong business and commercial focus, will allow them to provide in-depth technical evaluations of start-up businesses, contributing to successful investment decisions for the MDC and our fledgling investment proposition.


Main duties and responsibilities

  • Indepth technical evaluation of earlystage startup businesses from a scientific and business perspective (interfacing with our discovery teams and labs).
  • Lead the conceptualisation and development of new businesses from within the MDC to launch.
  • Working with crossfunctional teams across the MDC to prepare decision points for the onward development of MDCoriginated innovation.
  • Supporting science functions within the MDC in preparing compelling business cases across our scientific work as well as for research syndicates and national programmes.
  • Keeping up to date with market developments and technology trends. Particularly within life sciences and healthcare/digital health.
  • Assess new dealflow opportunities and deal origination.
  • Financial modelling and business case creation.
  • Develop and maintain a network of industry experts, entrepreneurs, and potential partners.
  • Collaborate with entrepreneurs and cofounders to validate and refine business ideas and models.
  • Lead the formation of new venture teams, and manage the recruitment of key personnel.
  • Identify and help secure outside funding for new ventures, through venture capital, angel investors, or other means.
  • Develop and implement business plans for new ventures, and ensure they are aligned with overall company goals and objectives.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to teams and help them navigate the early stages of business development.
  • Facilitate connections and collaborations between ventures and other companies, investors, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain financial and operational oversight of ventures, and make datadriven decisions to optimize resources.
  • Continuously evaluate and optimize the venturebuilding process to increase efficiency and scalability.

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

  • Degree qualified in life sciences, ideally supported by a relevant PhD or similar.
  • Business experience gained in a healthcare/digital health firm in a business/commercial or scientific role. Firsthand entrepreneurial experience (as a leader in an earlystage company or a founder/cofounder) highly valued.
