The post holder will learn to undertake a range of duties which will include;- Support the reception, admission, care provision, recovery and nurse led discharge of patients following the Endoscopy Nursing Care Pathway protocols and documentation.
- Work alongside the Registered Nurse and assist in managing a group of patients
- Learn to provide competent assistance during a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and ensure support and reassurance to patients undergoing the same.
- Gain understanding of endoscopic equipment and have awareness of general and specific infection control measures and related issues.
- Become competent to perform intravenous cannulation and venepuncture as required.
- Maintain appropriate department documentation.
- Assist with moving and handling of patients pre, post and peri procedure according to individualised patient care needs.
- Competent IT Skills.
- General cleaning of clinical areas and equipment in accordance with Infection Control Policies.
- Assist in maintenance of adequate stock levels.
- Utilise resources effectively and contribute to department's Cost Improvement Programme.
- On completion of training, be able to mentor junior staff, students and cadets.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CLINICAL
- Provide care in the clinical area as an effective member of the clinical team.
- Establish a safe working environment for patient and staff and ensure that patient contact and dignity are compromised as little as possible.
- Arrange the reception, admission, transfer and nurse led discharge of patients, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within speciality.
- Working alongside a registered nurse, assist in the care for a group of patients, facilitate the co-ordination of an Endoscopy List.
- Learn to act as named nurse and room nurse in the Endoscopy unit, providing competent assistance during a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including complex procedures.
- Carry out the bedside decontamination process of endoscopes and have an awareness of general and specific infection control measures and related issues.
- Maintain appropriate department documentation - e.g. profiles, care plans and electronic record.
- Co-ordinate safe transfer and positioning of patients
- Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards
- Ensure the safe removal of clinical waste and contaminated items including blood products.
- Send equipment for repair with appropriate documentation
- Undertake daily checks of Endoscopy equipment and report any faults to relevant dept or person
- Taking charge in absence of more senior staff
- Prepare and arrange transportation of equipment to other hospitals
- Organise loan equipment
- Ensure equipment is available prior to start of list
- Check equipment into dept from external companies/hospitals
- Perform Intra Venous cannulation and venepuncture
