We are looking for a dynamic, creative, flexible individual to join the Junior School as Deputy Head from 1
January 2025 or sooner if possible.

Teachers at MGS benefit from being members of the Teachers' Pension Scheme.

deputising for the Head in her absence. They will be a motivated individual with the ability to teach across
the full age range in the Junior School. The role would suit an experienced educator with energy and
imaginative ideas, who thrives on challenging able children. The vision and creativity to make a real impact
on the pupils and staff of the Junior School will be vital. The person appointed would be expected to
demonstrate strong leadership and organisational skills and a deep understanding of curriculum
development, assessment and pupil achievement and make a significant contribution to the co-curricular
life of the School. The school has a strong track record of preparing deputies for headship. Over the last ten
years, 4 deputies have secured headships.


MGS Junior School
The Junior School is comprised of some 250 boys, aged 7 to 11. Boys are selected for entry on the basis of
their extraordinary potential by observing their individual talents in imaginative lessons, not by a
traditional entrance examination.

Junior School pupils are full members of MGS and do not need to pass any further test to enter the Senior
School. The Junior School curriculum is broad and challenging, directed towards the special needs of

is very well-resourced. Junior School pupils and staff benefit from the use of many of the Senior School's
excellent specialist facilities, including its sports hall, theatre, swimming pool, art studios and science
laboratories.

**Deputy Head of Junior School job description
The Deputy Head plays a pivotal leadership role in supporting the Head of the Junior School in the overall
development and the day-to-day operation of the Junior School.

The Deputy Head of the Junior School will therefore be required to cover a wide range of pastoral and
academic responsibilities. Whilst this job description gives an indication of the range of responsibilities
and needs of the Junior School and the day-to-day requirements.


Academic and Curriculum Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Head of the Junior School to develop, implement, monitor and review the Junior
School Development Plan***Page | 2

  • Promote best practice in teaching and learning to enhance pupil achievement

  • Lead staff meetings and briefings

  • Some teaching commitment (nonclass based)

Assessment, tracking and reporting

  • Coordinate the assessment schedule for internal assessments and CPIs**
  • Alongside the Head, monitor and evaluate academic performance and progress
    :
  • Analyse internal and CPI data and, with the Head, lead Pupil Progress Meetings
    :
  • Provide support to form tutors on report writing and quality control written reports**
    Safeguarding, pastoral support and pupil wellbeing
  • Manage discipline, pastoral and safeguarding issues and support colleagues to do so
  • Be DSL trained with a good understanding of safeguarding procedures
  • Record Safeguarding and behaviour concerns on CPOMS
  • Deliver assemblies, including those of special significance
  • Be part of the late night rota until 6pm at least once a week
  • Be part of the Junior School Duty rota

Staff management and induction

  • Performance review and line manage TAs, including the creation of their timetables
  • Engage with the recruitment of teaching and support staff in the Junior School
  • New staff induction
  • Management of staff absence and cover timetables, ensuring suitable work has been set

Trips, residentials and co-curricular

  • Oversee the detailed process for organising trips, including residentials and overseas visits
  • Liaise with the Activities Office to ensure all documentation is in place, staff are briefed and
- prepared and trips have been well-planned
  • Deliver cocurricular activities to enhance the before, during or after school club provision

Health and Safety

  • Carry out the duties of the Fire Safety Officer
  • Review and update Junior School risk assessments

Admissions

  • Be involved in delivering assessment lessons and observations for entry into the Junior School**
  • Provide school tours to prospective families**
