Our aim is for our ward to be a centre of excellence and current initiatives include working towards implementing the recent clinical guidelines for Stroke which aims to provide patients with Stroke skilled care to reduce mortality and long term disability.

Stroke services are undergoing significant transformation and require a Ward leader who will support the future changes and lead the team to provide a high quality service through a period of change.

There is on-going investment to ensure our staff have the right skills, values and expertise to provide high quality specialist care for Stroke patients.


University Hospitals Dorset has 55 Stroke inpatient beds and Ward 9 Stroke Unit provides acute stroke care and rehabilitation to 19 of these patients.

This is an exciting opportunity for a professional, enthusiastic positive person who takes pride in their work to create a vision and collaboratively work with the multi-disciplinary team to promote and build and maintain independence for our patients

  • Provide leadership and demonstrate a high quality of clinical care and practice
  • Coordinates and manages the delivery of interprofessional car
  • Ensures the prompt instigation of appropriate treatment following consultation with the relevant care group
  • Monitors the plans of care for patients with other team members to ensure that care is implemented and remains appropriate to the needs and wishes of the patient
  • Ensure clear lines of communication between the ward team, Matron's and wider Directorate
  • Provides and receives complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are
  • Contribute to developments in the Trust in response to Trust objectives and develops practice accordingly
  • Ensures patient care is delivered in accordance with established policies and protocols and to the agreed standard
  • Deliver specialised care in keeping with the needs and wishes of patients and their family

  • To Lead and develop Ward 9 Stroke Unit to meet the needs of the service
  • To lead and manage the development and provision of a high quality nursing service and environment for the inpatient service of ward / department
  • To provide specialist nursing knowledge, expertise and advice, facilitating the provision of evidence based patient centered care pathways and package
  • To ensure that resources are efficiently and effectively managed to deliver a high quality service
  • To work closely with specialty Consultants, multidisciplinary teams, other clinical leaders, Matrons and directorate managers to provide a high quality and costeffective patient focused service
  • To establish a balance between clinical and managerial demands so as to maintain clinical credibility.
