Job Introduction

The starting salary for this role is £29,291 per annum and is based on a 36 working hour week.

About Us

The Highways and Transport service is responsible for ensuring the effective management, maintenance and improvement of all highway and transport assets.

Highways are the most valuable asset managed by Surrey County Council with a replacement value of approximately £7.5bn and are critical to the economic growth of the County.

As such, the service manages significant financial, health and safety, and reputational risks.

The service operates in an environment with significant political engagement and has daily contact with MPs, Cabinet members, backbench Members and committees.

About the role

As a Highway Maintenance Officer, you will be responding to reported highway issues and understand how highway maintenance impacts both the network and users.

You take a pro-active and flexible approach, seeking to find practical solutions to problems.

Working with a range of contractors, you will help to ensure value for money and a quality service for our residents.

You will communicate with customers and promote the work of Highways and Transport, enhancing the public appreciation of the statutory framework, financial constraints, and engineering standards in which it operates.

You'll work closely with teams across the service to ensure we offer a comprehensive and efficient service.

About You
We are looking for highly motivated individuals who can make a valuable contribution towards maintaining the highway network. You will require strong customer service, communication, organisational and IT skills.

You will have achieved a good standard of Secondary Education or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience in a Highway maintenance-based role.

Highway Maintenance Officers are responsible for managing their own workloads and ensuring customer response times are met.

Knowledge of site safety procedures and temporary traffic management practices is essential as the role involves site visits as well as office-based work.

Managing customer expectations is a major part of the role as the wishes of the public frequently far outweigh SCC resources.

It is therefore essential that you are able to maintain a calm and professional demeanour as highway issues often become emotive.

  • Practical experience and understanding of a specialist area or supporting service teams and/or providing support to the public
  • Ability to work on your own initiative, with solution focused, problemsolving skills
  • Proven written and oral communication skills with the ability to engage and work in collaboration with others
  • Comprehensive knowledge of computerised business systems
This position is countywide although you would be designated your own area within the county to manage. However, if and when required, areas may be changed to best suit service need.

Your contracted work base will be the Merrow Complex but there will be
opportunity to work from one of the more local offices as well as remotely to aid with your efficiency in this role.

Due to the nature of the role, a
full driving licence is essential.

You will be provided with a company van which can only be used for work related duties and must be stored at night at one of our depots.

If required, you will also be sent on a course to gain your NRSWA accreditation.

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values we follow.
