Description
The post holder will provide support to the Anticoagulant Practitioners in the Anticoagulant Clinic.


The post holder will manage new referrals to the Anticoagulant service, assessing the urgency of the appointment and booking patients into the clinics as appropriate.

The post holder will manage the telephone advice line.

The post holder will organise and run a counselling service for patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation who have commenced on oral anticoagulant drugs after clinical assessment by a Band 6 nurse.


Organise a system for communicating with patients newly commenced on oral anticoagulants (after clinical review by a Band 6 nurse) to provide them with written information backed up with telephone counselling.


Communicate blood test INR results to patients via the telephone after they have been dosed by one of the Anticoagulant Practitioners.

This requires a high level of communication skill to ensure that accurate information is given and understood by the patient.

Provide administrative support to the Anticoagulant Service, undertaking clerical work necessary in assisting the efficient running of the department and supporting the clinical staff

Management of the Anticoagulant Office, answering the telephone and bleeps as appropriate and dealing with all enquiries.


Dealing with enquiries from patients and general practitioners, either by telephone or letter, in a sympathetic and efficient manner to include giving patients INR results and advice according to information provided by the Anticoagulant Practitioners.

Management of the telephone Anticoagulant Advice line by dealing with all messages possible and prioritising the remainder of the messages for the Anticoagulant


Co-ordinate patient appointments and re-schedule cancellations and delays within a specific time frame according to referrals and type of diagnosis.

To achieve this, patients will need to be scheduled on a priority basis
