Communications Officer

Part time - 17.5hrs per week

Fixed term contract until March 2024

Sheffield based (working from home)

We're Rethink Mental Illness and no matter how bad things are, we help people severely affected by mental illness to improve their lives. We're on a mission to bring about meaningful change, through our services, groups and groundbreaking campaigns. As a leading charity provider of mental health services in England, people living with mental illness and those who care for them, are at the heart of everything we do. They shape our expert advice, information, and around 200 services - everything from housing to community-based services. And they drive our campaigning to change the law and tackle discrimination. Together, we run over 130 local groups which provide vital peer support in the community. We know, from our vast experience, that people severely affected by mental illness can have a good quality of life. With your support, we will make that possible.


Rethink's Community Mental Health Unit (CMHU) has been established with the intended purpose of changing the face of community mental health care, to support communities and professionals to come together and collaborate more closely.


In Sheffield, we will develop and implement new models of community based mental health care, that integrate clinical and voluntary sector provision, in line with the NHS Long Term Plan and the NHS community mental health framework.


As a Communications Officer working for Rethink Mental Illness you will develop and implement a marketing and communications plan tailored to our programme in Sheffield. Acting as a comms all-rounder, you will work alongside the team in Sheffield, as well as organisations in the voluntary sector, the local authority, Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust and others to promote the work being undertaken. The primary audience for the programme is stakeholders and potential service users in Sheffield - you will identify and maintain the most effective and appropriate comms channels for these audiences, and also help to disseminate learnings to wider national stakeholders.

What we are looking for:


  • Experience of partnership working
  • Understanding of working with people who use mental health services and delivering coproduced comms work
  • Ability to form working relationships and experience of delivering successful internal comms across partnerships
  • Background in planning joint communications campaigns
  • Experience of setting up and managing websites
  • Experience of working on social media campaigns/ digital marketing.
  • Adept at working with media and key influencers to help build the brand.
  • Experience of embedding and working with a new brand, creating a narrative for which all partners feel ownership of
  • Able to work with organisation leaders to draw out key messages

You may also have:

  • Lived experience and/or a good understanding of mental illness and its impact on individuals and families.
  • Experience in a health or social care setting
