This is an exciting time to join the critical care and theatres team in this newly created post as the lead technician for service improvement and strategic development of the clinical and operational technical pharmacy services to the area.


The post holder will have the opportunity to lead a team of Medicines Management Technicians and Assistants providing pharmacy services across the highly specialised area of critical care and theatres.

Main duties of the job


To be the lead technician for service improvement and strategic development of the clinical and operational technical pharmacy services to the Critical Care, Enhanced Post-operative Care and Theatres areas.


To be responsible for ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient, high quality, innovative and cost-effective technical ward service by ensuring services are delivered to the minimum of accepted local and national standards, meeting current and future legal requirements and professional guidelines and ethical codes of practice.

To ensure the effective running of the Omnicell medicines storage solution within critical care and theatres.


To be responsible for the planning and delivery of a safe and effective technical ward service, in conjunction with the pharmacy clinical team.

To ensure appropriate levels and skill mix of technical staff are available to maintain agreed standards of service delivery.


To lead the development and delivery of the ward technician training programme, ensuring quality monitoring standards are developed, agreed and implemented.


To be responsible for ensuring quality monitoring systems are developed, implemented and agreed, and that targets and standards are set.

To line manage the Medicines Management Technicians and Medicines Management Assistants within the Critical Care and Theatres Pharmacy team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support clinical pharmacists by participating in the provision of a high quality, professional and effective medicine management service across Critical Care and Theatres at QMC:
Leading the technical clinical pharmacy service to critical care, theatres and enhanced post-operative care units.

Providing specialist level medicines management support to the service.

Leading on the training of the team of MMTs and Medicines Management Assistants working in the specialty.


Developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures relating to pharmacy processes within critical care, theatres and the enhanced post-operative care unit to ensure a high quality service is provided.

Leading on the management of the Omnicell medicines storage solutions, including assurances for effective stock control, storage and security.

Taking drug histories from patients on admission to hospital:

by checking patient's own medication, their medical notes, Medway, SystmOne, GP surgeries, recent discharges and any other appropriate sources of information.

ensuring that the medication history obtained is documented clearly & correctly as per pharmacy procedures.

accurately communicating issues back to the relevant pharmacist.


Communicating effectively, clearly and concisely complex or sensitive information to a wide range of staff, healthcare professionals and patients where there may be barriers to understanding.

Checking patients own medicines for suitability for use on admission and at discharge.

Checking the transcription of medication for discharge on the eTTO before the Pharmacist has seen the discharge prescription.

Carrying out final accuracy checks of discharge prescriptions against contents of patient's own drugs locker.

Maintaining up to date clinical handovers on NerveCentre.

Being responsible for the supply of items for one-stop dispensing (and self
- administration where appropriate) checking the patient locker to see what supplies are still available on the ward.

Highlighting the need for any additional compliance aids and supply if necessary to assist with medication complia
