The role


Aberystwyth University has a long tradition of teaching equine science, and currently offers courses ranging from BSc though to MSc and PhD.

In recent years the addition of the BVSc degree has seen the equine centre support practical sessions for veterinary students, as well as supporting teaching the Equine Centre is also used to generate income through provision of extra-curricular training for students, expert demonstrations, and the running of a variety of competitions for the local community.

In addition to the School horses, the Centre also provides commercial livery for students, staff and external clients. Furthermore, the Centre provides resources to underpin research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academic staff.


The individual will assist in the day-to-day management of the Institute's horses, the supervision of students on yard duties, the running of commercial events and activities, as well as supporting the practical instruction of students.

You will be a member of a team of three staff, the others being the Equine Centre Instructor, who has responsibility of the day-to-day management of the Centre, and 1 Practical Instructor.

Appointments are normally made within - 8 weeks of the closing date.

What you'll do

  • Assist with and be responsible for the day to day organisation of the Equine Centre, in the absence of the equine centre manager.
  • Supervision of AberWorks students on the yard undertaking practical tasks in accordance with the University Health and Safety regulations;
  • Instruct the ridden and practical care sessions for the students and external clients
  • Assist students to gather information for assignments, projects and dissertations.
  • Assessment and instruction of students and external clients, to BHS standards to generates income
  • Maintain the facilities and equipment of the Centre in a suitable condition for practical instruction and student assessment;
  • Maintain of adequate stocks of all essential materials for the smooth running of the yard;
  • Responsible for the daytoday care of the Institute's horses and those owned by livery clients on University premises, and take any necessary remedial action to ensure the health and welfare of the horses at all times;
  • Plan and carry out dressage and show jumping competitions and clinics for liveries and external clients to generate income.
  • Assist with the recruitments of students on open and visit days.
  • Promote the Equine Centre to prospective students and commercial livery clients, maintaining the reputation and good name of the University at all times;
  • To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are - Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills required:
Essential

  • Minimum BHS Stage 2 Equitation and Horse Care Certificates and be willing to gain BHS stage 2 teach qualification, or a BSc (Hons) Equine/Animal Science or equivalent experience.
  • Full valid UK driving licence or equivalent right to drive in the UK. To include towing a trailer.
  • Experience of working on an equine yard, with proven competence in stable management and equine training and health;
  • Ability to work as part of a small team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students and customers
  • Ability to use standard computer programmes
  • Ability to communicate well and have had experience in a customer based situation
  • An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
Desirable

  • BHS equine Specific or equivalent first aid course
  • Teaching qualification equivalent to BHS stage 2 teach or UKCC level
  • Experience of working within a University/College environment and supervising students
  • The ability to effectively supervise students on yard duties or undertaking practical instruction;
  • Experience of schooling and training horses.
  • Oral (spoken) C1 and Written Welsh Level C
