Job summary:


The work of the Pathogen Genomics Sequencing Service is to support UKHSA's genomics surveillance programmes, to aid detection of outbreaks and transmission of infections, to characterise and correlate genomics to virulence and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms efficiently and effectively, and generate evidence to support effective interventions, all within the wider UKHSA objective, to significantly reduce the overall public health burden.


Based in the Pathogen Genomics Laboratory Team at UKHSA Porton Down, the
Quality Lead in collaboration with the Technical Manager will lead in the implementation and maintenance of the quality management system (QMS).

This will include departmental responsibility for managing the electronic quality management system, Q-Pulse, which is used to manage complex information on a variety of UKHSA and Specialised Microbiology and Laboratories-wide topics.

These include documents and records, audits and non-conformities, complaints and compliments, equipment, suppliers and training records which are critical for providing ongoing assurance of high-quality work and compliance with standards and regulations.


Job description:


This is a
fixed term appointment until Oct 2024 and the post holder will support the Pathogen Genomics Technical Manager, National Quality Co-Ordinator, Head of Operations and Deputy Director for Pathogen Genomics in achieving, developing and maintaining the quality system, accreditation and certification, as appropriate and to support continual improvement in quality processes in accordance with UKHSA policies and procedures.


The post holder will focus on attaining UKAS ISO15189 accreditation status for the COVID sequencing service in the first instance and extension to scope for other pathogen genomics services as they are implemented.

They will provide professional direction and leadership in establishing an effective quality management culture within the Pathogen Genomics team at Porton Down.

UKHSA Porton also hold approval to provide IBMS registration and Virology specialist portfolios to provide a diagnostic service to the UK.


In addition, the centre undertakes both basic and applied research into understanding infectious diseases and manufactures a number of healthcare products, including vaccines and therapeutics.


Key Responsibilities

  • To take a leading role in the implementation of a Quality management System in the laboratory, meeting the requirements for ISO1518
  • To ensure that processes needed for the quality management system are established, implemented and maintained.
  • Report directly to the Technical Manager and National Quality coordinator on the performance of the quality management system and identify any need for improvement.
  • Ensure the promotion of awareness of users' needs and requirements throughout the laboratory organisation.
  • To identify to management any potential conflicts of interest which may impinge on their ability to perform their duties effectively as defined by UKHSA Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Ensure the laboratory participates in suitable EQA surveys monitors results and feeds back to Management any deficiencies.
  • Work independently to fulfil the quality related responsibilities and functions of the laboratory including suggesting and driving quality improvements and the management of control of change procedures within the laboratory.
