Description

(Fixed-Term full time 8 months, to start immediately until 30th Sep 23)
You must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK.

About Bendi

Are you interested in working at the cutting edge of technology to predict and reduce human rights and environmental abuses in global supply chains? This is an opportunity to be a core part of a dynamic research and development team looking to make a positive impact for people and planet.

The project is funded by Innovate UK and will deliver a risk-based sourcing tool to enable fashion and têxtile brands to manage human rights risks in their supply chains.

Your work will make up a valuable and significant contribution to the project's output.

There will be opportunities for professional development working with an ambitious early stage UK start-up team bringing innovation to industrial commercialisation.

There may be potential to join the team in a full-time capacity after the project.

The role
To lead research related to Bendi's risk model looking at human rights and environmental risks.

What you will do
With the support of the Bendi team, you will:

  • Build models of human rights and environmental risks
  • Have a deep understanding of what data and metrics are already available (such as national risk indices, relevant regulation)
  • Synthesis data to advise Bendi on how insights can be enhanced and given nuance
  • Work extremely closely with Bendi's data science team to develop forecasting models

To do this you will carry out:

Core tasks

  • Identify and structure relevant sources for Bendi's statistical modelling of environmental and social/human rights risks
  • Source and clean existing datasets to build Bendi's models and network
  • Explore diverse datasets (including full text articles), integrating them into the network if applicable
  • Help build Bendi's statistical model and provide opinions on formulas and methodology
  • Identify, conduct and synthesise expert interviews with key domain experts and stakeholders
  • Map current and incoming regulation relevant to Bendi's mission

Additional tasks

  • Identify opportunities for external relationships and collaboration;
  • Contribute to the development of strong external links to business and industry;
  • Represent Bendi at events, meetings, and networking;
  • Other adhoc research tasks as required

About you

This is a position for a smart, talented individual who is interested in the power of technology to be a force for good.

Some experience of working in a small team in industry is a must, previous start-up experience is a bonus.

We'd love to meet someone who has/is:

Must haves

  • An advanced degree in a field or discipline relevant to the area of investigation including political economy, social sciences, statistics, economics or environmental sciences
  • Experience in advanced quantitative research design and analysis such as modelling
  • Comfortable translating qualitative information from reports and news into quantitative information
  • An excellent communicator
  • The ability to work both proactively and independently, using own initiative but also as part of a wider team
  • An understanding of basic statistical approaches applied to standard problems such as regression, classification and timeseries analyses
We are looking for a strategic thinker with strong communication skills: both written and on the phone/Zoom. You will enjoy taking on challenges and learning about things beyond your role.

Working at Bendi
You'll be working with an enthusiastic team of makers and doers.

Working times are flexible, but productivity isn'tThis is an all-hands-on-deck, fast paced environment where commitment and a good sense of humour are appreciated.

You must have high accountability and be able to plan your time efficiently as this is a tight project.

You're one of the team.

It doesn't matter if you have to head off early to pick up your kid or take care of other stuff - the team will have your back.

If you see something that needs fixing or could be made better, do you move on thinking 'that's not my job' or do you take the initiative? (Even if nobody is looking.) If any of the team see you need help, they will step up and lend a hand.

In return you do the same for them. You don't just follow instructions, you think about them. But you're pragmatic enough to sometimes just 'do what's necessary' to get things done. You're logical and 'get' how things are put together.
