Youth advisor within the Leaving Care Team:

This post is a Hybrid post working within the community/leaving care designated space/office/home
To work with youths aged 18 to if in Education), looked after by the authority who are placed in various settings and accommodation.

To act as "personal advisor", preparing and supporting youths towards independence enabling a positive transition and provision of after care support as appropriate.


Main Duties and Responsibilities
To provide advice (including practical advice) and support to youths in receipt of a leaving care service.


To participate in the assessment and the preparation of the pathway plans and any other reviews and planning meetings as necessary for young people.

To participate in the reviews of the pathway plans

To liaise with the responsible authority in the implementation of the pathway plan

To co-ordinate the provision of services and to take reasonable steps to ensure that the young person makes use of such services and that they are appropriate to the young person's needs

To remain informed about the relevant youths or former relevant youths progress and wellbeing

To keep written records of contacts with and of services provided to, the relevant or former relevant youths.

To liaise with other agencies, such as housing, education, benefits agency, health as may be appropriate for the youth

To develop, support, review and offer advice to Supportive Lodgings Providers

To actively participate in the continuing development of the services provided to young people preparing and leaving care

To attend meetings, conferences, support groups at a local and national level

To undertake such training as is deemed necessary to improve personal performance and knowledge in accordance with the Council's Training Policy


Skills, Abilities and Behaviours

  • To relate effectively to a diverse range of children and adults, to establish and maintain a range of effective communication and participation mechanisms to involve a range of people from a variety of backgrounds, gaining their confidence and trust.
  • To act as a positive role model for children and parents/carers.
  • To work effectively and efficiently as part of a team of professionals and engage the local community with parenting projects and initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including strong communication, written and verbal and listening.
  • Ability to research relevant information, and to participate in developing the team's business plan.
  • The ability to manage and structure time effectively and efficiently

  • Proven ability to work within the context of equality of opportunity, and to support and promote practice which is antidiscriminatory and inclusive.
  • Ability to make use of management systems including IT in recording, retrieval and analysis of information.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to working within an equal opportunities framework. In service delivery to the community, in relationships with colleagues, and in employment practices.
  • A full understanding of current issues facing parents and children, particularly where there are issues of safeguarding.
  • Knowledge of relevant theories and practice in order to support families to break negative cycles and improve healthy lifestyles and outcome.
  • Knowledge of child care and child protection legislation alongside current guidance, recommendations and practice.
  • Knowledge of issues involved in working with children with disabilities and disadvantaged families.

Experience

  • Experience of working with children and families from a variety of backgrounds and developing and delivering effective provision in either the public or voluntary sector.
  • Experience of effective partnership or cross sector, multi agency work.
  • Experience of working with families on practical parenting tasks and delivering parenting programmes.
  • Experience of preparing reports and assessments in respect of children this may include presenting to Court
  • Experience of contact work.
  • 2 years minimum experience working with young children and families
  • A qualification in First Aid or the willingness to train and acquire the qualification
  • A relevant practice qualification in childcare, education, health or social care, e.g. NVQ 3 or equivalent
