About the opportunity


This role plays a key part in supporting the wider Action Tutoring team with HR and Safeguarding matters and sits within the Finance, HR and Operations Department, reporting to the Head of People and Culture.

Contract and hours:
Fixed term 12 month maternity cover contract

0.6FTE/full time until 31st May. Full time from 1st June 2024.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Safer recruitment for staff and volunteer tutors_
  • Responsible for ensuring staff and volunteer tutor safer recruitment records and related checks are up date and complete
  • Undertaking preemployment or preengagement checks
  • Completing risk assessments for staff that have lived abroad.
  • Collecting references, and ensuring they meet our standard requirements.
  • Undertaking 'prohibited from teaching' checks and ensuring results are accurately recorded.
  • Conducting ID calls for volunteer tutor DBS checks.
  • Processing DBS checks and DBS update service checks.
  • Managing the DBS renewal process
  • Completing safeguarding checks using the safeguarding dashboard
  • Support with cover for DBS processing at initial tutor training.
  • Responsible for maintaining the staff register for safer recruitment results and recording any action taken.
  • Safeguarding_
  • Undertaking an initial triage of safeguarding concerns and incidents raised by members of the team and referring to senior staff as necessary.
  • Taking safeguarding working group minutes.
  • Training other members of the team as required.
  • Maintaining and overseeing the tutor safeguarding refresher training using a dashboard
  • Compiling safeguarding data into termly reports for the team and board.
  • Any other ad hoc tasks deemed relevant by the CEO, Safeguarding Team or Senior Management Team.
  • HR_
  • Supporting the Head of People and Culture with recruitment processes. This will include preparing paperwork relating to the selection process and offers of employment and following up with applicants and the hiring manager to ensure both sides have a quality hiring experience.
  • Coordinating the induction for new starters.
  • Supporting with arranging and administering team days.
  • Coordinate birthday cards/ leaving presents & events.
  • Coordinating regular employee surveys and providing initial analysis of survey results.
  • Preparing monthly HR reports.
  • Maintaining the HR database, ensuring that all the information contained therein is relevant and up to date.
  • Preparing contract amendments as needed.
  • Assisting with all other HRrelated matters providing advice to other team members if necessary.
  • Supporting other team members as required including covering for staff absences as required.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the level of the post.

Person specification

Qualifications criteria:


  • A-C in maths and English at GCSE (or equivalent).
  • Experience in safer recruitment practice and working within relevant procedures and guidelines.
  • Experience in HR administration.
  • Right to work in the UK.

£25,600.00-£27,805.00 per year
