We have a post in our Psychological Medicine and Older Adult Directorate for a Therapy Enabler based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Chelsham House, one of our older adult acute wards.


Chelsham House is our Acute Dementia Specialist Assessment ward and provides person centred treatment and care to older adults with acute needs associated with their Dementia, through a well-established multidisciplinary team.


About the team:


Our patients are older adults who have mental health difficulties and / or dementia and require specialist in-patient care prior to moving back into the community or on to other specialised settings.


About the role:

The purpose of the Therapy Enabler (TE) role is to provide therapeutic intervention through day-to-day routine.

The post is key in supporting patients to regain and maintain their independence in activities of daily living and help in supporting the transition of care from the in-patient wards and specialist care units, back into the community setting.


The role will involve supporting the multidisciplinary team (Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists and Psychologists) to facilitate the recovery of service users who are in-patients within a PMOA in-patient setting.


The post holder will help to provide a range of interventions from basic functional activities of daily living to more complex therapeutic interventions such as physical activity, life story work and supporting communication.

This will be carried out through 1:1 work and group activity.

The role aims to better incorporate therapeutic techniques into the day-to
- day routine of the ward setting, in order to promote functional independence and provide valuable information to the patient's holistic assessment.


About the location:

You will be based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, which has over 200 acres of green space in the London Borough of Bromley, South

  • East London. There is substantial parking at Bethlem Royal Hospital, however the site does get busy at peak times but there are nearby train and bus services available for travel to the Hospital and an interhospital bus that runs between the Maudsley Hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital throughout the day.
Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2).

We also provide services and operate across other locations, such as London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth.

The role includes working both on and off the unit, both with and without direct supervision.


The post holder will need to develop positive relationships, demonstrate genuine empathy with service users and carers in order to bring about hope, enable recovery and to support service users to improve their quality of life and promote social inclusion.


Communications and Working Relationships:


  • Monthly supervision will be provided by the Band 7 Occupational Therapist with regular profession specific support also provided by SLT, Physio and Psychology.
  • Line Management from Ward manager
  • Daily contact with the MDT including nursing, csw, psychology, medical staff and discharge teams
  • The post holder will support the MDT in liaising with relevant community and voluntary groups
  • There will be regular peer support with fellow PMOA STR and TE workers bimonthly.
