Job description:
Overview of the job
The HMPPS Victims Team, based in the Public Protection Group, has oversight of and responsibility for operational policy for the Probation Service Victim Contact Scheme.
The Scheme is for victims of specified serious and sexual offences where the offender receives a prison sentence of 12 months or more, or a hospital order.
The Team Leader will support the Head of the Victims Team with managing and delivering the work of the team.

The post holder will report directly to the Head of the HMPPS Victims Team in the Public Protection Group of HMPPS.
This is a non-operational role, however the post holder may occasionally be required to travel to prisons and other venues such as Probation Offices around the country (England and Wales), with the occasional need for an overnight stay, sometimes at short notice, to support the Victim Representatives in exceptionally high profile cases, or rarely, to provide emergency cover for a Victim Representative
Summary
This is an extremely high-profile role - victims' issues, including individual victims, are frequently in the media, and victim issues are high on the Ministerial agenda.
Many of the victims we support are high-profile and household names and/or influential and campaigning individuals, making this an extremely sensitive post.
As part of this role, the job holder will have access to documentation of a sensitive nature relating to these crimes.
Therefore, this can be a very emotionally demanding job.
With a new right due to be introduced for victims, which will allow them to remain for the whole of the Parole Board hearing, there is a current pilot being run to test the processes for victims and evaluate their experience.
As a result, we are increasing the number of Victim Representatives in the team, who support victims before, during and after they attend a full Parole Board oral hearing.
The Victim Representatives are there to help prepare the victim for the hearing.This post is a new role which will oversee a team of Victim Representatives and take responsibility for the management of these cases in the pilot, and then implement national roll-out, to ensure that the process runs smoothly for victims.
The post holder will be required to directly manage the team of Victim Representatives, including recruitment, supporting with training and ongoing development, allocating the Representatives to individual cases and oversight of the work on these cases to ensure it is in line with policy and meets the standards of the organisation.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Manage and improve the efficiency of the team. The post holder will have direct line management responsibility for team of staff. They will be required to ensure that objectives are set and hold regular reviews to provide honest feedback and support development to meet HMPPS objectives.
- Oversee the caseloads, including close oversight of high
- profile cases, where there is the potential for widespread and sustained national media coverage and the postholder needs to be mindful of any issues that arise from these cases.
- Provide first drafts and/or oversee the management and drafting of good quality, accurate and timely responses to official public correspondence, including Ministerial and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) letters, treat official correspondence, FOI requests and Parliamentary Questions (PQs) in respect of victim attendance and related matters.
