An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Child Health Gastroenterology department.

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist, starting as soon as possible for 12 months, at the Paediatric Liver, GI and Nutrition centre at King's College Hospital.

This is a full-time post covering most aspects of paediatric gastroenterology, joining Dr. Vadamalayan who leads the paediatric gastroenterology service allied to the large paediatric hepatology service at King's College Hospital. The post holder will be the fourth consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist.


The Paediatric Gastroenterology service is also supported by Prof Anil Dhawan, Dr A Baker and Dr Jonathan Hind (Clinical Director).

Prof Anil Dhawan, director of Paediatric liver, GI, Nutrition centre, leads the service including hepatology, the intestinal failure service and small bowel transplantation.

The Trust has recently been granted the second national contract for small bowel transplant in children.

There is an established multidisciplinary nutrition team providing TPN (hospital & home) and enteral nutrition support. Paediatric Surgeons, Paediatric Hepatologist and Paediatric Gastroenterologist provide upper and lower G.I endoscopy services including variceal banding.

Specialist services like impedance pH study, Bravo pH study, Ano rectal Manometry, single and double balloon endoscopy, video capsule endoscopy and ERCP for children are performed at King's College Hospital.

There is a very close link with other sub speciality services including Paediatric allergy, respiratory and adult gastroenterology team at King's College Hospital.


The post holder will have access to inpatient beds at King's College Hospital in general paediatrics, paediatric surgery and hepatology depending on the indication for admission.

  • Together with three other Consultants in Gastroenterology, to provide a gastrointestinal service. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  • Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit. Responsible also for covering colleague's periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  • Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  • Responsible for providing elective clinical services out at weekends and utilising vacant
daycase and endoscopy lists for the department as agreed with the clinical lead and divisional management team.

  • To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  • To contribute to the Audit Programme.
  • To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division's Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  • To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Gastrointestinal services.
  • To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  • To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and
